Montgomery Hord Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 27, 2001.
Fan of the Military

Montgomery McCullough Hord was full of jokes. He liked to carry a wallet full of $2 bills to watch cashiers get confused. "They would always fumble around for some place to put them," said a longtime friend, Tom Cabela. "He was always full of hijinks."

"Before we were married, he used to say of $2 bills, `Chicks dig them,' " said his wife, Lisa. "The other reason he liked them was that the bills were always new."

Mr. Hord, 46, of Pelham, N.Y., was a partner and vice president for institutional equities at Cantor Fitzgerald. He and his wife had three children: an 8-year-old daughter, Molly, and 7-year-old twins, Sophie and Jack.

Though he never enlisted, he was a huge fan of the military. He used to call his father-in-law, Fred Sharp, every Veterans Day and Memorial Day to thank him for serving in the Air Force during World War II. The weekend before Sept. 11, he bought a book about World War II aviators for him, Mrs. Hord said. Inside he wrote: "Fred, though it may not be your exact story, I'm betting it's close. Your contribution will not be lost on our family. Love, Monte."

Mr. Hord asked his wife to mail the book to her father on Sept. 10. But she forgot. She ended up giving it to her father in person on Sept. 13, when the family came together.

I knew Monte from several years of living together at the Sig Ep house in Lincoln. He was a roommate, brother, and friend. We had several memorable times together including a visit to Holdrege for a high school football game. After a shower, he came walking out in my mom's bathrobe and slippers. He instantly became a member of the family. I think of you often, Monte, especially this time of year.

I was a friend of Monte´s in Chicago. I only learned of his death on 9/11/01 a couple of years ago. While it was a shock, it didn´t surprise me that he was helping others get out of the World Trade Center-Monte was a very kind person and had a keen awareness of others in need. That he jumped in to assist without consideration for his own safety is consistent with who he was.

I, too, remember his "thing" with $2 bills-the "Chicks dig `em" line-his respect for the Uniformed Services and his penchant for self-care and eating healthy foods. There were plenty of other signature Monte lines and life philosophies! And although I didn´t know his Lisa and their children, do I recall Monte telling me when he had met Lisa, he knew he had met "the one."

On this 22nd anniversary of that day that changed us all forever, I´m thinking of Monte and offering prayers for peace in his name. May God continue to bless him, Lisa, Molly, Sophie, and Jack. I´m so very sorry for the loss of your dear husband and father.

It’s been 20 years and I only knew Monty a little bit. We worked on the CBOE together. He was always so funny, so well dressed, so sweet. When I went to the Memorial in NYC I was standing in the room that had all the names on the walls and I turned around and looked and his name met my eyes. He was a great guy. So sorry for your loss.
Rest In Peace Monty and look down on your kids and wife and watch over our country as an angel.

I met Monte in the fall of 1973. We were pledge brothers in Sigma Phi Epsilon, and I had the good fortune to be roommates with him part of my freshman year. He was a good friend, always having a positive attitude, People loved kidding him about his matching slippers and bathrobe, he was always sharply dressed.

Shocked and saddened when I learned of your passing, but uplifted by being able to call you friend. Good thoughts to your family today, 9-11-2016

I only learned recently about Monty and want to express my deepest though so belated condolences to his family. Although a Manhattan native, I met him in the early 1980s with fellow trader friends while living in Chicago. What stands out most in my memory is his humor, manners, and intelligence.

September 11, 2015

Monte was a fraternity brother of my husband, Bob Joyce. I only met him once on Memorial Day Weekend 1983. And boy was it memorable! We had gathered a random group of people, none of whom knew each other, to meet at a bar where Ramsey Lewis was playing. Somehow, a bunch of the guys decided to hire Ramsey to come play a party in Lincoln. Business cards were exchanged. I know, because Bob still has the card that says Montgomery Hord, Since 1955. It is his favorite business card ever. At any rate, we ended up back at Monte's apartment and for some unknown reason, people were dropping drinks out the window. The next day, very hungover, we met Monte for lunch. He had been to work and acted like he had had a full night's sleep. He was just one of those charsmatic people that you never forget.

Monte was a good kind soul. I knew him from Asbury in Tuckahoe. He was always kind and I cry every time this 9/11 comes into conversation. Damn, all he did was show up for work. Hope the family has worked all the "kink" out. Wow... God Bless you all.

I think of Monte often, I grew up with him and his family. He was my friend, my mentor, and my support many times. God gave the world someone special for a time, I am a better person for knowing him.

March 27, 2012

I got here tonight in such a random way. I saw in the 9/11 Families Association's Newsletter that there is a Memorial Dinner every year for Monte's boss, Michael Rothberg. Monte loved Michael and I received incredible strength from his family in the days and months after 9/11. I have lost touch, but not for long now!
I am so touched by everyone's comments. The children and I are doing well. The children are incredible and of course I have Monte with me every day in each of them. He is with us everyday and we find his love in our hearts over so many daily activities. How could we not? For those of you who knew him, right? He would never let anyone he loved, ever forget him!
We all miss you Mont--everyday. I know how proud you are of Molly, Sophie and Jack. They are THE BEST kids in the universe! Thank you for getting the Golden Rule through to them before you left us! They each practice it every day and I am pretty sure they do it for you, big guy. We love you and you stay in our hearts every day.

September 23, 2011

Scott, what a beautiful gesture and how kind of you to post on Monte's memorial. I knew Monte when he was in Chicago and he was so funny and bright. He was loved by all who knew him...and now beyond. I'm from St. Louis, Missouri and on 9/11, there was a memorial honoring those whose lives were lost. There was one flag for each individual. Each flag had the name of the individual and where they were from. People were able to purchase the flags with the money going to the Injured Marines fund. The name on my flag was Montgomery McCullough Hord. I am very honored. Mr. Hord and his family are in our prayers.

At my University tonight we had a candlelight vigil in memory of those who lost their lives 10 years ago. Each candle holder had 3 names of the 9/11 acts of violence. One name was Montgomery McCullough Hord. Although I never met him, I will forever keep him as well as his friends and family in my prayers. God Bless.

I think of Monte every time this dreadful anniversary rolls around. I knew you in Chicago, through my dear friend, Jackie. Also some fellow traders. I can still see you in you Shatkin jacket with your glasses (just for the look) and your fresh $2.00 bills...and silly jokes. You used to say that you would never grow old..."probably dead by 43" and we just shook that off as vanity and a morbid sense of humor. I am so sorry that you are not there for your family and friends. Deeply saddened by your demise, it must be ten-fold (thousand fold) for them. My prayers go out to them ...and to you, my friend, I think you must have saved many of your colleagues at Cantor Fitzgerald. Word was you were headed down the stairs....so I think you stopped to help others, before yourself. Sally "Sly" from the CBOE

Just recently found out that I knew someone who was in the World Trade Center on 9/11/01. I was saddened to think that my friend from elementary school in Central City Nebraska was gone. (I went to Nebraska Christian for High School) Monte was a wonderful friend of mine back then and my thoughts will always go to Monte's family whenever I hear that tragic day mentioned.
May God's grace help you all deal with such great loss.

I think about Monte often. We worked together years ago at Dean Witter in Chicago. He had a great sense of humor and was very kind. Loved talking about his family in Nebraska. He loved pulling practical jokes. During a visit to his apartment, he was very proud to show me an award winning photograph of his boyhood home in Nebraska. An all around good guy, and I miss him.

During a church service on September 8, 2002, I received a request to specifically keep Montgomery and his family in my prayers as we approached September 11th. On September 11th, in remembrance of Monte, I delivered a prayer card to the altar of University United Methodist Church, San Antonio, Texas, as the congregation prayed for all of our heroes who died one year ago. I was honored to carry the Hord family in my heart to the altar.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn
