Paul Friedman Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 13, 2001.
A Problem-Solver

Paul Friedman, a shy, kind man with a surging mind, was always a problem-solver. Of the five Friedman siblings, he was the listener, the untangler of life's knots. He would pose a zillion questions, leading his siblings toward their own solutions. Professionally, he played a similar role. With degrees in psychology, engineering and business, he became a management consultant for Emergence Consulting in Lincoln, Mass.

You could not not like him, the man who at snoozy business meetings kept his end of the table in convulsive snickers. The friend who shlepped rugelach cross-country for a pal, the human jungle gym for nieces and nephews, the husband who showered his wife, Audrey Ades, with gifts. He collected snow globes (only the tackiest!), saved his report cards (including those from Hebrew school), and gazed at the natural world, entranced, camera in hand.

At 45, he tackled his most delightful problem. In May, he and Audrey adopted a Korean infant, Richard Harry Hyun-Soo Friedman (nom de nursery: Rocky).

Mr. Friedman delivered rib-tickling disquisitions on the challenge of the dirty diaper. He spent Sept. 10 with Rocky. "Did you take him to a playground?" a sister asked. "No," replied the cerebral new papa. "I took him to Starbucks."

The next morning, Mr. Friedman boarded American Airlines Flight 11.

Paul Friedman

business consultant

By Globe Staff, 9/18/2001

Paul J. Friedman of Belmont, a senior management consultant for Emergence Consulting of Lincoln, died aboard American Airlines Flight 11 in New York City on Sept. 11. He was 45. Mr. Friedman was born and raised in Brooklyn, N.Y., and graduated from John Dewey High School in 1974. He majored in psychology at Johns Hopkins University and earned an MBA from New York University. He began his career at Bell Labs in Whippany, N.J. He had also worked for American Management Systems at the firm's offices in New York and Boston, and for Cap Gemini, Ernst & Young, and Fleet Bank. Mr. Friedman was an avid photographer and a collector of antiques and curios. He leaves his wife of eight years, Audrey Ades; a son, ''Rocky'' Richard Harry Hyun Friedman; his mother, Selma of Morristown, N.J.; three sisters, Iris Pollack of Brighton, Amy Radin of Short Hills, N.J., and Meryl of Medford; and a brother, James of Livingston, N.J.. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
Editorial Obituary published in THE BOSTON GLOBE on 9/18/2001.

Paul Friedman, 45, proud new father

He was brilliant, with advanced degrees in engineering and business. Creative, with an eye for antique furniture and a passion for photography. In recent months, though, Paul J. Friedman discovered a new joy: fatherhood.

Mr. Friedman, 45, and his wife, Audrey Ades, of Belmont, Mass., adopted a baby son in Korea this spring, and the hard-working management consultant was instantly transformed into a doting father.

"He gave us a dissertation last week on how to change a diaper," said Friedman's sister, Meryl Friedman, laughing at the memory. "He was very proud to be a father. He videotaped their first meeting with the baby in the nursery in Korea."

Mr. Friedman, a senior management consultant at Emergence Consulting of Lincoln, Mass., who once lived in Morris County, was aboard American Airlines Flight 11, bound for a business meeting at Warner Bros. in Los Angeles, when the hijacked plane crashed into the World Trade Center on Tuesday.

"He was the happiest he had ever been in his life," his sister said.

While Mr. Friedman was easily the brightest person who worked at Emergence Consulting, said company co-founder Allen Rupple, he had a dry sense of humor and often did silly things. When he proposed to his wife 10 years ago, months after meeting her at a suburban Boston synagogue, Rupple said he forgot to bring the engagement ring.

"He was always doing funny things like that," Rupple said.

Mr. Friedman grew up in Brooklyn, N.Y., and after earning two master's degrees from Johns Hopkins University and New York University, he spent seven years working at Bell Labs in Whippany.

In addition to his wife, Friedman is survived by his son, "Rocky" Richard Harry Hyun Friedman; his mother, Selma Friedman of Morristown; siblings and siblings-in law, Iris and Alan Pollack of Brighton, Mass.; Amy and Mitchell Radin of Short Hills; James and Krista Friedman of Livingston and Meryl Friedman and David Price of Medford, Mass.; and nieces and nephews.

I cannot believe it has already been ten years since you were taken from your loved ones. It seems like yesterday I watched the tragedy take place on TV..and had no idea my friend was on one of those planes.
I just finished a book titled "Memories" by a lady who lost her husband on 9/11. I hope you have left pennies or whatever around so your loved ones know you are watching over them and you are never too far away.

Rest in peace my friend.

After many years, I emailed Audrey last night after learning of the victory for humanity. When you were shockingly taken from us, an 8 month old baby was also left behind. Rocky is now a 10 year old boy. When his class said the 'Pledge of Allegiance' this morning, I'm sure it held an extra special meaning for him, with thoughts of his Dad. America, your family and friends have not forgotten you.

I stumbled upon this guest book for Paul this morning. Paul was a good friend of mine in public school and in Junior High School. We went to different High Schools and didn't keep in touch. I remember that Paul was a gentle and kind hearted person without a mean bone in his body. He deserved a better fate and his good nature contrasts sharply with the intentions and mindset of those who commit violence against innocents. No true religion can condone such acts. May God bless Paul's memory, his family and loved ones.

Yesterday our University (Idaho State) paid tribute to all of the victims of this tragedy. The students passed out names of the individuals so that we could wear his or her name for the day. As the day ended, I found that I had made some kind of connection with this man. And, as I found with many of my colleagues, we wanted to know more about our "person."

I just read bout Paul, and I am deeply moved and humbled at the priviledge of having even this smallest of connection with him. I also feel connected to his family and I extend to you my fondest thoughts and my deepest sorrow at the loss of such a wonderful man.

This experience is more than just a knowledge of an individual it is a true connection with a special life.

I knew Paul from our days together at NYU. Today I learned of the tragedy of his death from watching the memorial service at Ground Zero on television. When I later read about Paul on the NY Times Portrait, it struck me that he had not changed a bit since I last saw him a decade ago. A kind man with a surging mind, a problem-solver, a listener. He was always the one we'd pick (or stick!) in charge of our study projects. His wife Audrey and son Rocky should know he touched a wide circle of lives. A wonderful, gentle person, who I will always remember fondly.

My company passed out badges today to remember the lives lost of 9/11. I received Paul's name on my badge. I've worn it all day and have said many prayers for him and his family. I wanted to find out as much as I could on Paul. He sounds like he was a wonderful husband, brother, son and most of all father. My thoughts and prayers are with Audrey and Rocky. Paul didn't know me, but I'm lucky to have picked his name and learned of his life. I will never forget him.

I never met Paul Friedman, but I see by this picture, by his description, that he was a bright man with a nice smile. Over the past few days, I have been going through these entries, and I am struck by each person, each who lived a rich life, with loved ones and friends who still grieve. On this day, and the days after I send my wishes to this family, the family of Paul, who have memories of him, his adopted child who can hear these memories as an adult and think fondly of a father and a trip to Starbucks.

My name is also Paul Friedman. I watched the 2 planes strike the towers from my classroom window which is in lower Manhattan. When I finally arrived home later that night, my answering machine was filled with calls wondering about my safety. Were some of these calls meant for you? I'll never know but our lives now seem entwined and your ideals will continue through all the Paul Friedman's of the world.

To Family and Friends of Paul:

A sense of humor is a wonderful gift and this man shared it often. He also was caring, loving and giving. Truly all traits to be remembered and shared with Rocky as he grows. His dedication to family and to education and work are admirable. May you all find warmth and healing in memories and in God's compassionate arms.

It has taken me a long time to be able to talk about what happened Sept. 11th. It was a quiet morning as I headed to work at American Airlines. Half way to work I heard on the radio that this had happened, thinking this could not be a commercial jet. When I arrived We were put on a Emergency Response team. Those first calls were the worst days of my life. Paul's Boss was one of them. I have had trouble learning how to deal with my emotions and anger toward these terrorist. To the Friedman family my thoughts and prayers are with you. Paul and your family will live in my mind and hearts forever.

When I read Paul's name on the list of victims of Sept. 11, I remembered Paul as a friend of my son Douglas in Mill Basin. As this name is quite common, in our circle, I wasn't sure it was the boy I knew but when I read the obituary in the Times and read the names of Selma, Amy and the other names of his sisters, It comfirmed that this was indeed the Paul we knew. I notified Douglas about it and we would like to extend to the family our deepest condolences and heart-felt sympathty to the family.

Sincerely.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn
