Have only just been made aware of Ian's passing this week. Worked closely with him on many deepsea towage and salvage jobs when he, Ernie Kahlenberg and Alan Bond ran Selco Salvage. Brilliant mind, great character and an enormous help to a young salvage agent. Visited him in Southampton after Selco had purchased the 'Lloydsman' and Ian was Master for the voyage back to the Far East on the renamed 'Salviscount' . My phone rang every day for work, what a pleasure to have known him. My belated thoughts to Ian's partner and family, he would shine bright still today in this world of corporate salvage companies. Kind wishes, Bill Tinsley.

A very old friend from school days at Pangbourne. Always an eccentric. Brilliant sailor and master mariner as recorded in his published works. Followed in his great family tradition, father, a yacht designer of their family boat " Mary Helen" named after Ian's mother, herself famous for her adventures on the high seas and a recipient of the RY squadron cruising club annual award. Ian travelled the length and circumference of the world with panache and daring , undertaking some of greatest salvages in history; sailing around the world in his yacht. God father to my oldest son. A great character and bon viveur. He will be sadly missed. Rest well old mate. Adventures over but well lived.

So sad to read of Ian's death. A gifted sailor, astute businessman and trusted friend with whom I have lasting memories of innovative marine cases, always interesting work and fun times over more than 40 years. I am otherwise committed and so will be unable to attend on Monday but nevertheless my thoughts will be in New Milton .
