Pamela Dowson was an unforgettable teacher, of both Junior Geography and First-year English, when I attended Arnold High School beginning in 1955. Who could forget her alliterative definition of a Mediterranean climate, "Warm Wet Winters With Westerly Winds"? and who could forgive being hit with a detention in week one at their new school for failing a test on Chapter 1 of Treasure Island? Miss Dowson paid attention to all her pupils, whether it was to find fault with their personal appearance or to intimidate them for not speaking up. (I have finally learned to speak up.) Dowson heroically led the annual school trip to continental Europe for third- or fourth-formers, which trip I opted out of for that reason.
My sympathy goes out to those devotees who were with her until the end.

Remember Pamela Dowson well. She was my Geography teacher. I can still visualise her handwriting. Was able to pass on some of her knowledge to pupils of my own.
Inherited her love for travelling.
