William Pilling Obituary

Pilling
William Nicholas
(known to everybody as
Nick Pilling)
1938-2025, passed away peacefully on 27th May 2025.
Nick's early career as a mechanical engineer led him to Buxton where he worked for ICI (which later became Buxton Lime Industries (BLI).
Happily settled in Buxton, he progressed from Site Manager to Managing Director and was widely respected throughout the quarrying industry. Nick was also Chairman of The Institute of Quarrying and honoured by being made a Fellow of the Institute in recognition of his outstanding service to the industry.
He supported many charities, one in particular being BADOS (Buxton Amateur Drama and Opera Society),
and Blythe House Hospice where he served as Chairman for seven years during its most formative years.
He took part in many activities to raise funds for the charity and particularly enjoyed supporting Pat Holland who raised a significant amount for the hospice by organising the Halle Orchestra to perform at Buxton
Opera House.
Nick had a long history with the theatre. As a member of BADOS he was instrumental in saving it from closure by discovering a lease that allowed four live performances each year and, along with the BADOS team, raised a significant sum to enable the performance of live shows to continue and keep the theatre open.
Nick enjoyed several hobbies including golf, watching rugby, gardening and travelling. He especially enjoyed being with his family and was always ready to give a helping hand if needed. He was known for his unwavering kindness. He was a pillar of support to the local community, a mentor to his colleagues and a friend to all who were fortunate enough to know him.
Nick is survived by his wife Penny, his children David, Johnathan and Mandy and his grandchildren Kim, Emma, Katy, Lucy, Robert, Jenny, Daniel, Charlotte and Christopher.
It was Nick's wish not to have a funeral, but donations to Blythe House in his memory would be gratefully received.
Nick's kindness, generosity and love for his family and friends will forever remain in the hearts of all who knew him.
