St Margaret's Church, Bilsthorpe, was full with family and friends for the service which preceded burial in the churchyard of Mr John Taylor (65), of Scarborough Road, Bilsthorpe.
Music by Enya was played as the cortege entered the church for the service, during which a tribute was read by Mr Taylor's daughter-in-law, Pauline, and a poem was read by his granddaughter-in-law Kelly. As the mourners left the church the song 'Time To Say Goodbye' by Russell Watson and Hayley Westenra was played.
Born and educated at Bilsthorpe, Mr Taylor had lived locally all his life and had worked at Bilsthorpe Colliery as a supervisory electrician before retiring in 1994.
His interests included spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, caravanning and holidays abroad, mainly to China, gardening, DIY, football, researching the family tree and taking his grandchildren to play football.
He also chaired the Bilsthorpe Children's Fund for 20 years, fund raising so local children and their families could spend time at the seaside. He also helped to organise christmas parties, day trips to Doncaster Dome and swimming and ice-skating trips.
