P. CHILDS Obituary

Family, friends and
former work colleagues
were among the mourners
at Mansfield crematorium
chapel for the service which
preceded cremation of lifelong
local resident Mrs
Pamela Childs (69), of Sywell
Close, Sutton.
Mrs Childs was born at
Mansfield and educated at
the town's Moor Lane and
Brunts Grammar schools
and as a schoolgirl she competed
in swimming galas
and won many cups and
medals. On leaving school she joined the Civil Service,
working in the Pensions and Social Security office
at Sutton, leaving after a couple of years to train
as a nurse at the former Mansfield General Hospital.
After qualifying as a State Registered Nurse, she initially
worked as a staff nurse at the hospital before
becoming night sister there. She went on to be sister
at Langwith Lodge Diabetic Hospital and then spent
some time as a district nurse. After the birth of her
daughters, Mrs Childs returned to nursing after a few
years, working part-time as a staff nurse at King's Mill
Hospital, Sutton. Her final job was as a co-ordinator in
the Family Planning Services at Mansfield, until her
retirement in 2000.
Mrs Childs enjoyed gardening and was very fond
of animals, particularly cats, and had sponsored a
lion. She also sponsored The Tortoise Garden near St
Austell in Cornwall. She loved to see her family and
friends, particularly her grandson, Sam, and also enjoyed
listening to a wide range of music, especially
Barry Manilow and Rod Stewart. Her other interests
included reading and watching television.
Mrs Childs, who died suddenly at her home, leaves
her daughters, Helen and Angela, grandson Sam, her
former husband, John, two brothers, Eric and Chris,
sister-in-law Shirley, niece Denise and nephew Paul.

Mrs S. Brunt, Mrs P. Daws, Mr T. Thomson, Mrs C.
Kingswood, Mrs J. Foot, Mrs P. Chard, Mrs R. Lewin, Mrs

Floral tributes were from Helen, Angie and Sam; John;
Eric and Shirley, Denise and Paul; Chris and Marlene and
Gareth; Flo and Eileen. Donations received in lieu of flowers
were for the Parkinson's Disease Society.
The service was conducted by the Rev J. Burgess, and
arrangements were by Ivan Bramley.
