Mr Harry Exford
Mr Harry Exford, 84, passed away on December 24, 2023, at Chesterfield Royal Hospital.
Born in Chesterfield, Harry spent his childhood years in Hollingwood, where he lived with parents Vera and Harry, and brother Lionel. He was a keen sportsman, especially during his time at Netherthorpe Grammar School and Staveley Works, participating in track events, cricket, and football. He was particularly proud to have played for the Chesterfield Football Club youth team and was a lifelong Chesterfield supporter.
After completing an apprenticeship as a draughtsman, Harry changed careers and retrained as a maths teacher, working at Manor School, Markland School in Creswell and as the Head of Maths at Deincourt School in North Wingfield until his retirement. His dedication and passion for teaching left a lasting impact on his students and colleagues.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Harry became an enthusiastic author of poetry, publishing his own book 'A Portrait of Life.' He enjoyed yoga, holidaying in Europe with his wife and friends, and exploring further afield to destinations such as New York and Hong Kong with his daughter. Harry's passion for the Derbyshire countryside led to regular walks with friends, come rain or shine. He enjoyed nothing better than finishing an outing with a pint and lunch in a traditional pub. At age 63, his adventurous side led him to complete a 140-mile trek in the Sahara Desert to raise money for charity.
Harry was predeceased by wife Valerie in 2007. In the final six years of his life, he found companionship and joy with Sheila. Their shared experiences, laughter, and her unwavering support enriched Harry's later years, creating a bond that added love and warmth to his life.
Harry will be dearly missed by his daughter Kirsty and her partner, Chris. The loss of Harry leaves a void that can never be filled, but his memory will live on in the hearts and minds of those who had the privilege of knowing him.
The funeral service takes place on Tuesday, January 23, 2024, Chesterfield Crematorium, at 10.50am.
