John Hammersley Obituary

Mr John Edward Hammersley
Coxbench
Mr John Edward Hammersley passed away suddenly at home in Coxbench, near Little Eaton, on December 7, 2024, aged 83.
John was born in 1941 and spent the greater part of his life in Little Eaton. His father built The Chase, the street in the village on which he grew up, and he admired his father's success in the building trade. His mother died when he was about to turn eight, which had a profound effect on his childhood.
After working on the family farm at Ambergate in his teens – including building many farm buildings there – he told his father he wanted to go building. He built his first houses in Holbrook, and always appreciated that his father bought him the plot and materials to get him started.
He met Valerie, his wife, at the local dance hall in Derby, and helped convert the old butchers in Little Eaton to be her hairdressing salon, where she worked at the heart of the village for many years.
John was a master builder, and always considered himself fortunate to be able to work for himself, doing something he so enjoyed. He never shied away from hard work. Over his career he built 50 houses across Derbyshire, including in Little Eaton, Coxbench, Holbrook, Crich, Alderwasley, Sawmills, Ambergate, Belper, Horsley Woodhouse, Brinsley, Duffield, Codnor, Borrowash, Stanley Common, and Smalley.
He also farmed in Horsley Woodhouse, and with his wife raised three children. He loved the outdoors and was never happier than when he was outside.
When at home he loved reading about history and politics and watching the news. He loved the art of persuasion, of storytelling, and always enjoyed a good conversation!
Loved dearly by Val, his wife of 60 years, his brother, Chris, half-sister Susan, his children, Paul, Elaine, and John, his grandchildren, Julia and Annabelle, and extended family and friends. We all miss him a great deal already.
The funeral service will be held on Thursday, January 9, 2025, 1:00pm, St Paul's Church, Little Eaton, followed by burial with his mother, Mary, in the churchyard. All welcome.
Flowers welcome. Donations in lieu will support the British Heart Foundation and can be left at the service or sent care of Archway Funeral Service,
16 Chapel Street, Ripley DE5 3DL (01773 749028).
