Patrick O'Neill Obituary

Dr Patrick O'Neill
Dr Patrick O'Neill passed away at home on September 19, 2025.
He was 87 years old.
Born in Hollingwood, he was educated at Barlborough Hall School and then Mount Saint Mary's in Spinkhill. He went on to study medicine at University College, Dublin, where he met his beloved wife, Peig. In Dublin he excelled in boxing and was crowned British Universities Light Heavyweight Boxing champion in 1964. Press clippings at the time described him as 'fast and aggressive,' - a description that those who knew him subsequently found hard to believe.
Having graduated, he married Peig, returned to Chesterfield and worked as a GP at his mother's practice in the old Market Hall as his siblings, Doctors Matthew, Bridget, Ann, Mary, and Eileen had before him. He then moved to Saltergate Health Centre and then to Avenue House Surgery from where he retired in 2003.
Paddy loved golf and rugby and he would watch almost any sport at home. He was a member of the Round Table and the Catenians.
He was a cherished husband to Peig, a dear and loving father to his four children and an adored "Papa" to his ten grandchildren. He will be terribly missed.
A Requiem Mass will be held at 1200hrs on October 17, 2025 at the Annunciation Church on Spencer Street, Chesterfield.
Any donations in memory of Paddy will go to the Derbyshire Stroke Centre.
Donations can be given at the funeral mass or sent to B Hattersley & Sons, 211
Chatsworth Road, Chesterfield S40 2BA (01246 232820).

My family Dr for many many years . Taking over our families care from his mother and his sister Ann. Many fond memories of his humour and practical care. He was a massive support to my mother when my brother was born with Downs Syndrome and was amazingly always on call through many a health crisis.
My sincere condolences to his family x
