Silvino Francisco Obituary

Silvino Francisco

Silvino Francisco, a celebrated South African professional snooker player and beloved family man, passed away peacefully on December 14, 2024, at the age of 78.
Born on May 3, 1946, Silvino's life was marked by his dedication to his craft, his love for his family, and his passion for helping others.
Silvino rose to prominence in the snooker world during the 1980's, with his most notable achievement being his victory at the 1985 British Open, where he triumphed against Kirk Stevens in a gripping final. Known for his precision, poise, and competitive spirit, he became a respected figure on the international snooker circuit. He was also part of a storied family legacy in the sport, which included his brother, Manuel Francisco, and his nephew, Peter Francisco.
In his later years, Silvino stepped away from the public spotlight to focus on what he cherished most: his family. He is survived by his devoted wife, June Francisco, and his adoring grandchildren, Enola and Osiris, who brought him immense joy and pride.
Silvino dedicated himself to nurturing these close relationships while channeling his energy into charitable endeavours, particularly those that supported underprivileged youth and promoted the development of snooker.
Silvino's life was a testament to resilience, kindness, and the importance of giving back. His legacy lives on not only in the annals of snooker history but also in the hearts of those he touched through his generosity and unwavering love.
He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and the snooker community.
A private service will be held to honour his life on December 30, 2024, Chesterfield Crematorium, at 16.10hrs, followed by a reception at the Hollingwood Hotel. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Blythe House charity, in keeping with Silvino's lifelong commitment to making a difference.
Rest in peace, Silvino Francisco. Your steady hand and compassionate heart will never be forgotten.

Back in the 1980's and 90's Silvino was my favourite player. I had arranged a series of snooker events to raise money for charity, and decided to have a presentation evening where the trophies would be presented. I simply rang Silvino and asked whether he would be willing to come and do an exhibition! To my surprise, he agreed - and not only for that event, but two more events in the following years. I was amazed that he would agree to coming to such a small event, and it was a privilege to play against him - even though he did make a 102 break against me!! He also invited me to watch him play at the Crucible in the late 80's. I will be forever grateful for his generosity and for making a dream come true for a young fan. A great guy indeed!

My Oupa was a man who had smiles to brighten your days, who always made you feel good with his warm words of praise. And what´s more he knewwhat to do to make wishes come true.He was my Oupa.
My Oupa was someone who always had good stories to tell, but just as importantly he knew how to be a good listener as well.He was patient and kindand the very best friend you could ever hope to find.He was no ordinary man.
And I´m proud to tell the world that Silvino Francisco Was my Oupa.

"Nino"

Nino, with his grin so sly,
A sparkle always in his eye,
Each morning, he´d be waiting there,
Car keys in hand, wind in his hair.

He´d drive me to school, a thrill, a ride,
Corners sharp, no rules to abide.
"Hold on tight!" he´d wink and say,
As the tires squealed through another day.

To the beach we´d go, sun on our backs,
Stories shared over sandy tracks.
His laughter echoed, bold and free,
A tide of joy washing over me.

But oh, the speed, the daring chase,
Rules and limits? Not his space.
"Life´s too short to go so slow,"
He´d say, foot down, ready to go.

Even in the hospital bed he schemed,
Freedom glinted, his eyes still beamed.
"Book me an Uber," he´d whisper low,
"Let´s break out of here, we´ll hit the road!"

Nino, wild and full of flair,
A rebel´s heart beyond compare.
Fast and free, through sun or strife,
You sped through roads-and through my life.

Now when the wind brushes by my face,
I feel his spirit, his boundless pace.
Nino, forever, in heart and sky,
The fastest star speeding by.
