In Loving Memory of Raphaelle "Carlo" Scalfaro

Raphaelle Scalfaro, affectionately known as Carlo, was a man of strength, generosity, and timeless values. Born in Cortale, Italy, Carlo left his homeland as a young man, carrying with him not just ambition, but a deep-rooted sense of integrity and compassion. His journey took him across countries, including Switzerland, before he eventually found his home in Halifax, where he built a legacy not just in business, but in friendship and community.

Carlo was the embodiment of hard work. Over the years, he poured his heart and soul into a range of ventures-from running a garage and a sandwich shop to managing a bed and breakfast near Dean Clough. His crowning achievement, however, was the Woolmerchant Hotel in Halifax, which proudly housed Carlo´s Bistro. There, he became known not only as a talented chef but as a gracious host, serving generous portions and warm hospitality that left lasting impressions on everyone who walked through his doors.

I first met Carlo in 2003 while working at the Woolmerchant Hotel. From the beginning, he stood out as a caring soul, guided by old-fashioned values and a deep sense of kindness. Carlo was a giver-never one to take-but always ready to lend a hand, offer advice, or share a laugh. Our bond grew over the years, strengthened by regular chats, shared errands, and countless small moments that made a big difference. I had the honor of accompanying him on shopping trips, hospital visits, and appointments, but more than that, I had the privilege of calling him my friend.

To me, Carlo wasn´t just a friend-he was family. His wisdom, warmth, and unwavering support will remain with me always. It breaks my heart that I didn´t get the chance to say goodbye. But Carlo, Senior, you´ll forever hold a special place in my heart. Your legacy of kindness and strength will live on in all who had the joy of knowing you.

Rest in peace, dear Carlo. Thank you for everything.
