Only just heard the sad news about Jen . Memories of a wonderful vibrant lady , initially as one of my son Miles´ favourite teachers at RGS , more than 20 years ago and years later , as members of Ballaugh (Old Church) pop- up choir for Christmas / Easter & Harvest , as well as a great inspiration for aspiring authors .

Apologies - I live in Cornwall and Devon and have only just read of Jennifer's passing in a Manx Music & Dance newsletter. I got to know Jennifer while living in the Isle of Man, working for Isle of Man Newspapers and attending heritage events, and I interviewed her about one of her historical biographies as well as writing a review of her book on Charlotte de la Tremouille. I also exchanged messages with her on Facebook from time to time and received encouragement to continue my own historical research and writings from her. I therefore wanted to record my sadness to hear of her passing and to pass on my condolences to her family.

My dear Jess, Michael and I were so sorry to hear of Jennifer´s. She will be much missed. We have many memories, both of your parents and grandparents. As we are off the island, we won´t be able to be at the funeral. However we will be thinking of you all, and send our love. Fenella and Michael

I greatly admired Jennifer as a skilful, engaging writer and a dedicated scholar. We shared an interest in linguistics and in Manx language and we became friends. Especially in the years just before Covid she visited my home often, as a member of Possan Lhaih, a little group that met weekly to read and translate the Manx Bible, focusing on the Apocrypha, which had been dropped from the 1819 Bible and so in its 1979 reprint. Not surprisingly, these sessions were accompanied by coffee and biscuits (grapes for Jennifer who avoided sugar), and conversation. That's when I learnt about Jennifer's diverse life, recently and locally at Ballaholly with tales of Rusty, her dogs, her neighbours, loss of land to the sea, her disastrous house fire and rescue by prisoners from Jurby, and her visits to Frederik in Reayrt Skyal and Brookfield. But we got to know also about her multilingual life in more distant times and exotic places, in Gibraltar, Paris, Thailand, Germany and Denmark, and from yet earlier, tales of her parents and Prince Philip, a colleague of her father's in the Royal Navy. She was a strong and remarkable woman and a dear friend.

Jennifer was a writer and scholar I greatly admired, for her wide interests, and careful and vivid writing. We shared research interests in linguistics and in Manx language, and became friends. Especially in the years just before Covid, she was a frequent visitor to my flat as a member of Possan Lhaih, a small group that met to read and translate the Manx Bible, in particular, the Apocrypha, which didn't figure in the 1819 edition reprinted in 1979. The reading sessions, as one might guess, were also the occasion of coffee, biscuits, and conversation, in which we learnt about Jennifer's life experiences, both locally and recently, at Ballaholly, with Rusty, her dogs, and her neighbours, and visits to Frederik, and earlier worldwide, in Gibraltar, Paris, Thailand, Germany and Denmark, and tales of her parents. Such a lover of life, and a doer! My deepest condolences to her daughters and other family.

I am so sad to hear this news. I taught with Jennifer at Ramsey Grammar School. She was always so encouraging to me personally and school music, playing violin in the orchestra and until the end sending delightful messages to me. Thank you Jennifer for your intellect, kindness and unfailing support.

I have very fond memories of guest lectures from Jennifer while I was pursuing my MA in Manx Studies. She was so passionate about her subject every time she spoke. She was a brilliant person and a wonderful teacher. My condolences to her family and friends.

Many years ago I taught Jennifer to scuba dive, after a failed attempt with another instructor. Her initial frustration was overwhelmed by her determination to get qualified and prove that she could do it. She was an entertaining trainee with her sharp observational wit. Later on I very much enjoyed my visits to see her, and the scramble down the cliff with my young boys (actually I think they enjoyed it more than I). Rest in peace you amazing lady xxx
