Dear Liz, Sarah and Helen and Alans extended family. My deepest sympathies and condolences to you all. I was fortunate to have met Alan through a EUROGEM project back in the late 80´s and was blessed to have collaborated with Alan in recent decades on a depression genetics project in Ireland. Alan was a lovely and generous man, a great collaborator, and a wonderful scientist. It was an absolute pleasure working with him over the years. You will be in my thoughts and prayers as you celebrate Alan´s life tomorrow. May his gentle soul rest in peace.

I used to run the East of Scotland group of Retina uk formerly RPFighting Blindness. Alan would come along to appraise of his research and we loved it. He was a great man doing great work on our behalf in order to find treatments for Retinitis Pigmentosa. He gave us all hope and we all are hugely grateful. His colleagues carrying on this great work are standing on the shoulders of giants.
Alan in particular.

Alan was the finest of men- kind, clever, talented, calm and with a great dry sense of humour. He gave so much to his family, his work and his friends. We think about you very often and treasure the memories. You are greatly missed by all
