Eric SIMMONS Obituary
SIMMONS
Eric Barrie W.S.
(Edinburgh)
Passed away early morning December 12, 2025, at Marie
Curie Hospice.
Born in Glasgow in 1946 and despite moving first to East Lothian and then later to Edinburgh, Eric clung to his identity as a 'Glasgow boy'.
He enjoyed his years at Hillhead High School, in particular the music department, where he found lifelong friends as well as a love for all things percussive. Equally delighted by crashing timpani at the end of an orchestral overture as he was by the great jazz drummers of the day, Eric pursued as many opportunities as he could to play drums. Even when studying law at Glasgow University, he continued to drum, spending weekends touring the highlands with Fergie MacDonald's ceilidh dance band, later regaling his family with the tales from those weekends on the road.
Fortunately, his studies didn't suffer and Eric ultimately went on to join and then lead the Barlas and Sharpe law firm, as well as taking on roles within the Law Society of Scotland and becoming a Writer to the Signet.
A devoted father and grandfather, Eric provided endless encouragement to his children and grandchildren in their studies and particularly in seeking to pass on his love of music. His was a life of faith prioritising Christ and serving as an elder for many years in the Church of Scotland.
Eric is survived by his wife Roza
and his children, Ann and Andrew
and their families.
A funeral service will be held at
1.30 pm, on Monday, December 29, at Warriston Crematorium, Cloister Chapel, Edinburgh, to which all friends and family are invited. Family flowers only please, but donations may be sent to Marie Curie Cancer Care.
