Hugh died peacefully at home in
Sydney, Australia, surrounded by
his family. Beloved husband of
Hilary (née Salvesen). Loving father
of Iver, Niall, Maryen and Rozie
(Rosalind). Adored grandfather of Kylie, Alastair, Hilary, Timothy, Monte, Brittany, Hadrian, Annabel, Elvis,
Arwen and Hamilton. Much loved great-grandfather of Casper and Elise.
Will be sadly missed, but now at peace after a long illness.
Athlete (hockey and cricket), minister
in the Church of Scotland and the former Presbyterian Church of NSW. Scholar and author in aboriginal astronomy and culture. Former Principal of St Andrews College, University of Sydney. Dearly loved mentor, educator, and marriage celebrant to many.
A service will be held 11 am, Thursday, November 20, in Sydney, Australia, https://www.picaluna.com/rsvpmaker/rev-dr-hugh-cairns/.
There will also be a memorial held in early 2026.

Hugh is such a generous, gracious man. He was always deeply interested in the person before him, keen to know what mattered and always checking in on past conversations to see how things went.
His extraordinary intelligence was always applied to build up the people around him. Whether old research or new interest, he contributed to build others up, not to puff himself up.
I am deeply privileged to call him my friend and will always be grateful to have met.

Dr Cairns was one of those rare figures whose authority inspired genuine respect rather than obligation. My time at Drews remains unforgettable largely because of him-he was a mentor in the truest sense, offering sincere guidance and empathy that left a lasting impression on anyone that knew him.
He will be missed. My heart goes out to the Cairns family. MD
