Ian died peacefully in his home of 50 years, as he wished, with his daughter beside him on January 17, 2025,
aged 89. Beloved husband of the late Ann, and dearly loved and very loving father of Karen. Professor Emeritus of Microbial Physiology, University of Edinburgh.
Private burial.
A gathering to commemorate his life will be held at Oakvale, 106 Whitehouse Loan, Edinburgh, EH9 1BD, on Friday, February 21, at 2 pm. (A webcast will also be available: enquiries to
[email protected].)
Please dress cheerfully. Ian led a long and fulfilled life, educated a generation of scientists, gave public service, never showed self-pity and was much loved all his life.

In 1978/79 l was completing my honours year. Dr Sutherland was my Director of Studies. He was such a wonderful teacher, offering kindness and encouragement in abundance. He linked me with his connections at the Max Plank Research Institute in Freiburg Germany where l enjoyed working for a year after l left university. Thank you Dr Sutherland.
