I remember many an evening playing darts in The Lane Arms; Alan usually won, he was a much better player than I was. He could always come up with a joke and tell it well; I recall the short ones he said he'd got from his father: "Dad, there's a man at the door from The Sun. Well if he's come that far you'd better let him in." or "Dad the invisible man's at the door. Tell him I can't see him." As for the long winded tale of the man bragging about the speed of his greyhound and being challenged to a race against a tortoise, that still brings a smile to my face 40 years on, he told it better than Jimmy Tarbuck did on the telly a few weeks later.
