Barbara Symonds Obituary

We regret to announce the passing of BARBARA LUCILLE SYMONDS (NEE HORTON), in her 94th year, of Wilberforce, Ohio, USA. She passed on 30th December, 2020. She was born the youngest of seven children, to the late Josephine and James Horton, Sr. Loving mother to Curtis Symonds (Patricia), USA and Dianna (Whitecross) Taylor.She grew up in Somerset, Bermuda with her six siblings: James (Jimmy) Horton (Lillian), Christabell 'Christy' Cann (Henry), Geraldine Bassett (Leslie), Kenneth Ray Horton (Dorothea 'Peggy'), Bessie Whitecross (Allan) and David Horton, all now deceased. She leaves to treasure her memory grandchildren Brandi and Destiny Charleston, Jason and Javin Taylor, Demetrius, Karrington and Curtis Symonds; great grands Tahje Taylor and Kalise Symonds; nieces, nephews, family and friends too numerous to mention. Her passion was dance. She would tell you, if you can walk, you can dance. She taught dance in Somerset and started the Somerset Majorettes. She was offered employment as a college professor post her graduate degree, at Central State University, her alma mater where she taught physical education and dance from 1957-1988. She continued teaching young children dance until 2004. She was a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc, Links, Jack n Jill and Christ Episcopal Church in Xenia, Ohio USA. Her wishes were to be cremated with interment in Somerset, Bermuda. Funeral services will be conducted in Xenia, Ohio on Thursday 18th February 2021 at Christ Episcopal Church. A private service will be held for immediate family and friends at Pearman Funeral Home to view the service at 3.00pm.Covid-19 restrictions apply. My Condolences on the loss of your Beloved Mom, Gran,Aunt & Family Member Mrs Horton Symonds.In our younger years,many of the Somerset girls had exciting experiences as
students of her dance school and majorette
troupe.Wheneever we were taught a new routine I smilingly remember her famous command "HIT IT"and we tried.She was the BEST! Mrs Horton Symonds will be forever and fondly remembered for her contributions to Bermuda as a School teacher,Dance teacher and a singer in the Entertainment Industry.Be comforted by your Beautiful Memories during this unhappy season.

I send my condolences to the family of Barbara Symonds nee Horton who lived on Cooks Hill, Somerset and who started the Somerset majorettes many years ago. We were so proud of her and back then everyone girl wanted to be a majorette. I joined the majorettes under Ms Horton before she went to live abroad. So proud to have known your and may her legacy live on.
