Brian Flanagan Obituary

BRIAN THOMAS FLANAGAN, son of Tommy and Gladys; brother to Pat Skill and loving uncle to his nieces and great nephews and nieces. Brian passed away April 20, 2025 in Vancouver, Canada with his sister by his side. Brian had a charismatic presence that embraced everyone he met. Graduate from West Van High he attended UBC and was in the first graduating class in Hotel Management from B.C.I.T. He worked at Hy's as a bus boy while at university working his way up to assistant to the president. In 1969 his love of travelling lead to opportunities to work in some of the most beautiful tropical hotels. In 1974 he married beloved wife Judy in Curaçao. In 1976 he settled in Bermuda with Judy and their kennel of rescued dogs. Brian spent 30 years at The Southhampton Princess Hotel as Catering Director. He loved the hotel business because he enjoyed helping people and making them laugh. Some highlights in his career were meeting Queen Elizabeth, Prince Phillip, Princess Margaret, The King of Saudi Arabia and a conversation on a beach with President George Bush Senior. The everlasting friendships Brian made in Bermuda were ones he held very close to his heart. Retiring to Costa Rica to build their dream home Brian continued to make dear friends. When Judy passed Brian decided it was time to come back home and be with his family. The friendships he made in his community brought a great deal of joy to his life as did becoming closer with his family. Brian loved to garden, share a good meal with friends, and collect art. He often complemented strangers on the sidewalk hence leading to a conversation. Brian will be missed. We love you Brian.

Brian was so unique that words cannot encapsulate his originality but his kindness and warmth enveloped everyone he met-he was my mentor in the hotel business where I worked with him for 10 years at the Southampton Princess(now Fairmont Southampton). His influence on the events side was immense and catapulted Bermuda into "the place to go for incentive travel in the 70´s and 80´s" and to this day the kernels he sowed have grown into more and more creative events. I named my eldest son Brian in his honour and have become a gemologist in many ways as a result of Brian´s wife Judy who was an incredible gemologist after she left the hotel business. Brian we will miss your positive energy, enthusiasm and occasional piercing wit that lit up our shores for almost half your long life. Best always from your friend Peter Darling

Brian was one of the most delighted and delightful people I've ever met! His enthusiasm and joy for life was infectious. I remember clearly his obvious thrill at being recognized by his peers as he went bounding up to the stage to accept his Visitor Industry Partnership award some years ago at the South P. My sincere condolences go to his family and friends who will miss him very much.

To Brian's family,
So very sad to hear of Brian's passing. I was one who had the pleasure of knowing him during his tenure in Bermuda. He was one of the kindest, most pleasant men I have ever met! I had the pleasure of being his hairdresser and we enjoyed many a laugh over the years! May God bless you with comfort and the remembrance of happy memories of time spent with Brian.

I had the privilege to work with Brian on a few projects - from my days with the Department of Tourism and later as a DMC - and on each occasion his professionalism manifested itself through his attentiveness and his respect for his staff and his clients. I am honored to have called him a friend, even from a distance over recent years. He was a good man and the world will miss him.
