Dear Diana,
I was deeply saddened to hear just today for some unknown reason about the passing of your Fatherand my Captaina Captain in so many ways to young men in this Country on whose lives he had such a profound influence. He was a second father to all of us in The Boys Brigade, we loved and respected him and he will always live on in our hearts and minds, a kind and humble man but full of wit and fun, dedicated helping young men reach their fullest potential. I know he would have been 100 in April, it will be many years before anyone can fill the shoes of our Hero!

Dear Diana,
We have just returned from Arizona and received the news about your Dad. Our thoughts and prayers are with you as we remember so fondly our wonderful relationship with your Dad. There are so many memories of our time together - they just keep flooding through - as we know you have. He reminded me so much of my own Dad, same stature and smiling. and Irish too! My (Elizabeth's) Dad was 94 yrs. young, a little younger than your Dad (100 in April I believe.) I know you will have many great memories of him. May he rest in peace and rise in glory!
Hopefully we will see you sometime when we are in the Bermuda. (our telephone no. is 1-647-348-9005 - Canada)
Lots of love,
+Patrick and Elizabeth White

Diana,
Please accept my sincere condolences. For the last fifty years, your father's deep faith and goodness have inspired me, first as a boy in his Sunday School class, and finally when I saw him in the cathedral a few years ago. At that time I thought: Mr. Downs is as close to a saint as I'm likely to see in this life. A truly fine man. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

A true gentleman for sure and indeed the best thing ever to happen to the St. Paul's Paget Boys' Brigade. Thank you for taking me (a whole bunch of us really!!!) to Canada (Montreal) and also to England - London, the Isle of White and also Holland. I can still vividly remember standing in that field in the Isle of White singing our hearts out and travelling on that barge up and down the canals through Holland. The walk-a-thons to raise money. (St. Paul's to St. George's Town Square. OW!!!) The car washes and endless bake sales at St. Paul's. Although many years ago those trips will live forever in my heart and memory. The many Parades in and out of St. Paul's - marching ever so correctly behind the Boys' Brigade Flag under your watchful eye - and also that of Bobbie Rego. The weekend camping on Burt's island. The services down in the chapel on the island. Bravo, Mr. Downs. BRAVO!! You touched so many of us in a truly profound and wonderful way - you will never fully realize the depth of our love and gratitude!! Now go forth and rest in eternal peace in our Lord's presence beside your loving wife Gertie. Never could more fitting words be spoken - "well done thou good and faithful servant." Until we meet again.
