David Boyd Obituary

We regret to announce the death of David Miller Boyd, of Beaufort, South Carolina, on January 8, 2021. David was born on February 7, 1944, in Knoxville, Tennessee, to Barbara and Donald, and grew up in Bala Cynwyd and Lansdowne, Pennsylvania with his siblings Dick, Steve, Barbie, and Rob. David had the sorrow of surviving each of their deaths, as well as the death of his son-in-law J.P.David is survived by Susan, the love of his life, whom he married in 1966; his daughters Melanie and Jennifer; his grandchildren Caroline, Caden, Ella, Sarah, Izyan, Giselle, and Jurnee; his sons-in-law Doug and Kyle; and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and in-laws. David charmed his way into the hearts of everyone who knew him, and thus also leaves behind friends and colleagues from every era of his life.David attended Friends Central High School, then built a career for himself in the hotel industry. He spent many years in Bermuda, leading the Grotto Bay and Sonesta hotels; he was especially proud of reopening of the Sagamore Resort in Lake George, New York, which he directed through the 80s and again in the early 2000s. David spent his retirement in Hilton Head and Beaufort, South Carolina, during which time he consulted widely, while also volunteering at the Deep Well Project. David loved his work, to which he brought enormous creativity, humor, and warmth. For much of this time, David was also facing down significant health challenges. But he loved life and was determined not to let pain or anything else get in the way of living it. David fought his way back many times over, gaining decades with the family he loved. The six months he spent with Susan in Lecce, Italy were a particular triumph. David's final months were a time of comparative health, and his death sudden. A memorial service will be held for David in the United States later this year, once travel becomes more possible. Donations may be sent to The Eliza DoLittle Society.

My deepest condolences Susan and family. I always enjoyed David's humor but also his imagination and great business acumen in Bermuda and later in his quasi retirement. Lots of laughs too. "To live on in the hearts of those he leaves behind, is not to die."

Dear Susan, Melanie, Jennifer and Family. We just heard of David's passing and are heartbroken. We remembered that yesterday was Davids Birthday and tried to get in touch to say Happy Birthday. When we could not, we became concerned and started doing research. So very sorry for your loss and send our deepest condolences to the Family. We had so many great times in Bermuda both at Sonesta and at Grotto Bay. He was just a fabulous person who will be missed by all that were lucky enough to know him. May he rest in peace. David was a long, dear friend to my mother-in-law, they spoke almost daily and he was incredibly generous to our entire family for decades. He hosted our wedding at the Sagamore and also many family visits to Bermuda over many years. He never failed to make us comfortable and feel cared-for. I'm sorry for Susan's loss - he was genuinely crazy about her. I'm glad he managed to enjoy some period of less medical challenges in his later years; that was always a tragic burden to see him carry.

I worked at Grotto Bay with David for over 10 years, and he was definitely hospitality driven, he knew how to get the job done. It was great working with him. Great memories.

Front Desk Supervisor/Benefits Manager at the Sagamore Hotel - Not many have had such an impact, very few - he kept us all in integrity within ourselves, he added so much joy and we know all about the fun pranks, yet he nurtured our self respect and pride. The truest of leaders who left a forever stamp on our hearts and brightened our already bright spirits... Because of his natural ability to lead with poise from the Adirondack Mountain Tops, he allowed our lights to shine, and for that we will always have an everlasting glow...He guided us through harmony and rhythm, bringing us all together as a true working Family. He reminded me so much of my dad, I use to tell him this. Love and peace to Susan and Family - holding you all tight ❤

David was a true gentleman! He guided and mentored a number of young hospitality professionals at The Sagamore. His caring for our well-being and sense of humor will forever be remembered. I was fortunate to be one of those young professionals. God Speed my friend! They welcomed a gem up there in heaven!!
