I first met Mr. Wainwright in 1999. I was preparing for and competing at my first Night of Champions in the fitness category. That was the division where the ladies were judged on their one arm push-ups, splits, strength moves, and body symmetry. I placed 2nd but only the 1st place winners were allowed to compete overseas at CAC. I asked Mr, Wainwright, who was the president of the Bermuda Bodybuilding Federation, if I could pay for my own ticket and room so I could compete. He agreed. I placed 3rd overall and won the Best Routine. The next year, at CAC I won the Fitness competition and became the first person in Bermuda to win their pro card.
For many years after I stopped competing Mr. Wainwright would call me once a year, just to check o me and my family. After telling him what was going on in my life he always seemed to know already. I never quite figured out how.
The last time I spoke with Mr. Wainwright was earlier this year. That was the first time since I met him that he ended the conversation first. Anyone that knows Mr. Wainwright knows he loves to talk. This was evident at the Night of Champions whenever he had the mic. There were scripts typed for the hosts but Mr. Wainwright would always go off script and we all had to just wait until he was done. He was a wealth of knowledge in bodybuilding, fitness and scoring. In fact, Mr. Wainwright was a CAC Bodybuilding Fitness Federation judge.
I will miss chatting with Mr. Wainwright. He was a walking testament of healthy living and the importance of weight training in every sport and in life.

I met Mr. Wainwright at the latter end of the 80's. I wanted to become involved in the Bermuda Body Federation as it was known then.
At first on meeting Dennis, I was surprised that he wasn't a bodybuilder. However I was informed by him that he had an avid interest in the sport. He then informed me about his true passion which was cricket, but he also played football.
Of course he was a true follower of West Indian Cricket and from our interaction he had not only visited the Caribbean to watch test matches but he had also met and grown to know quite a few of the cricket legends.
At this stage though, Dennis in his own way wanted to give back and he directed his focus towards revamping the BBF and taking our local competitors towards the regional and international stage of bodybuilding which he achieved during his tenure. To add to this Dennis also became a Regional and International Judge and a sitting Judge with the CAC and the IFBB.
I remembered Dennis in this arena mostly because this was where we interacted the most, and I am proud of what he accomplished as the President of the Bermuda Bodybuilding Federation which then went on to be the Bermuda Bodybuilding and Fitness Federation during under his leadership.
God speed Dennis, and I will remember you always.

After 25 years away, my return to Bermuda as a personal trainer at Sea View Gym opened the door to bodybuilding, thanks to Mel DeRosa, who invited me to a BBBF Meeting where I meet Mr Wainwright, an inspiring leader who welcomed and motivated everyone. I took up various roles gym rep, fund raising and the most challenging secretary, despite my hesitations these roles became a fulfilling aspect of my 3 year involvement under Mr. Wainwright´s mentorship, I learned the dedication required for bodybuilding. His humor & storytelling made our meetings memorable.
RIP Mr Wainwright, your spirit will never to forgotten.

Dear Mrs. Wainwright and the family of Dennis Wainwright my sympathies are extended to each of you.
I knew Dennis as an athlete, a gentleman and a follower of Christ.
My memory goes to recent years when a strong contingent of Christian men would journey to 'The Men of Valour" Conference. Dennis was in the number. He added a certain "pizazz" to the group. I enjoyed his presence amongst us.

I knew Dennis, when he was at the Bermudiana Hotel, and saw him for the man that he was. As we know Dennis had a soft gravely voice. A lady guest came up to him and she was very upset ( I dont remember why) Dennis took both of her hands and said. " Please slow down, take a deep breath, now another deep breath, now please tell me what the problem is, and I will do everything in my power to solve your problem " With his approach and soothing voice, and calm manner, the guest did calm down and Dennis sorted out her problem. I saw the lady a few days later, and we chatted. she made the comment, if there were more men like Dennis, the world would be a much better place. He made her feel like she was without a doubt, the most important guest at the Bermudiana Hotel. --- From what I saw and remember Dennis made everyone feel special.

Dear Mrs. Wainwright and the Wainwright Family:
I am saddened to learn of Mr. Wainwright's passing, but am so blessed that I recently called and spoke with him and Mrs. Wainwright. I first met him and his wife during his years of managing the old SeaView Gym. I was privileged to serve as his vice president on the former Bermuda Bodybuilding Federation and as his head judge for 17 years at the bodybuilding and fitness competitions.
Mr. Wainwright was always a professional who shared his knowledge and provided guidance. He also seemed to have a kind word and smile for everyone he worked with. I learned much from him during those years and will surely miss seeing him around or calling him and Mrs. Wainwright at home. He was also an active member of his church and contributed time reading to school children.
SIP, Mr. Wainwright. I pray for your family's (and friends') comfort through the many wonderful memories of their times with you.
Sincerely,
Sunshine

I'm saddened by this unexpected news. Dennis was larger than life. I admired him so much, as a cricketer and as a person. He was no slouch on the football field either. My parents, Lance and Mary Hayward, and I extolled him at Cup Match; I worked with him for a while as part of the Bermudiana family and always found him to be a very charming gentleman. I pray the knowledge that his was a life well lived, and that he was loved, admired and an inspiration to many will bring some comfort to his family in this time of loss and mourning.

To the family and numerous friends of Dennis, you have my sincerest condolences. Dennis Wainwright is a national treasure, a legend in both Cricket and Football and a role model to many sports disciplines. It was a pleasure and privilege to know him. He had a unique story and observation of history in Bermuda. I will certainly miss our chats over lunch, which we had several times when I was in Bermuda. I pray for all those who mourn his passing that you be comforted by the fact he lived a great life and was victorious. May he Rest In Peace after enduring a long, successful life.

I knew Dennis when we worked together at JS Vallis in the 60's....with the other sports legend, Bummy Symonds.
