The obituary notice in the RG is superb. It succinctly describes Eldon: his personality and his achievements, emphasising his commitment to helping others locally and further afield and above all his commitment to his family.
I would like to add a few Bermuda aspects:
one already touched on by several others was his love of music, especially drumming but also the bagpipes, fostered by the Bermuda Cadet band, and which developed and remained special throughout the rest of his life.
two:His love of wild places and concern for wildlife started when, as a neighbour of the now wildlife expert, David Wingate, the young Eldon was a supportive sidekick and would regale his family excitedly about what David was doing. The interest in the natural environment was also everlasting.
three: Even more significant was his love of playing cricket, not only in Bermuda but as a student in Canada. He was part of a Canadian cricket team which toured in the UK in the mid 1960s. Their experiences showed Eldon that life in the UK could be enjoyable. This encouraged him to apply for the Bermuda allocation of the Rhodes Scholarship. His strong connections with activities in Bermuda plus academic studies in Canada obviously counted and he was awarded the Scholarship. He began his research studies in Oxford in 1967 and "the rest is history" as the obit. notice describes.
RIP Eldon - a Bermudian who made a positive contribution to our world.

Rest in Peace Dear Friend. Many happy memories of class mate days in Saltus, also the pipe bands.
Untill we meet again in the Land to come.

I have known Eldon since day one at Saltus in form one. As he lived nearby I and many other close friends turned out at his field at home almost every Saturday, for years, to play cricket in the summer and go for a swim off the rocks at the bottom of the hill on North shore. His mom, an amazing Lady, supplied the lemonade.
It was a shock this morning to hear that Eldon had passed away and Liz and I would like to pass along our sad condolences to Anne and his family... Eldon was always with a smile and when we met on the last occasion that I remember here in Bermuda..it was if he had never left. He carried his bat well and we will miss him. God Bless you Eldon and Anne and your family.

Sorry to hear about Eldon may he rest in peace, we were bagpipers together years ago with the Bermuda local pipe band, he was always smiling and good natured.
