GWENDOLYN YEARWOOD Obituary
GWENDOLYN MARY YEARWOODIt is with sadness that we announce Gwen's passing on August 24th, 2025 at Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary, Canada at the age of 91. Gwendolyn Yearwood (Hayes) was born on January 5th, 1934 in Vilna Alberta. She was the youngest daughter of Clarence and Florence Hayes. The Hayes family first moved to Calgary Alberta in 1941. Gwen graduated from the Calgary General Hospital School of nursing in 1956 and first traveled to Bermuda in 1957 to pursue her nursing career. It was in Bermuda that she met her husband, Tony Yearwood, on a blind date and shortly afterwards the two were married on December 7th 1957 at St. Theresa's Catholic Church in Bermuda. In 1958 Gwen and Tony moved to Vancouver, BC where Gwen worked as a nurse at the Vancouver General Hospital. It was also in Vancouver in August 1959 that their first daughter, Theresa, was born. In 1960 the family settled in Calgary where their second daughter, Wendy, was born in November 1960, followed quickly by their son Michael in November 1961. Gwen worked for the rest of her nursing career at the Calgary General Hospital.In 1985 Gwen retired from nursing and she and Tony moved back to Bermuda where they enjoyed the next 39 years living on Somerset Long Bay. During this time Gwen enjoyed golfing with the Southampton Princess golf club. She loved spending time on the beach with their children and grandchildren and especially loved having hot dogs at Horseshoe Bay when the family would visit. In July 2024 Gwen and Tony returned to Calgary where Gwen enjoyed her final days surrounded by family. Her greatest joy in life was being with her loved ones and she will be dearly missed by all of them. Gwen was predeceased by her mother Florence Hayes; father Clarence Hayes; sister Marj Depue (Dick Depue); brother Bob Hayes (Glenna Hayes), and brother Gerry Hayes (Leu Hayes). She is survived by her husband Tony; daughter Theresa, daughter Wendy (Stephen); son Michael (Tammie); her grandchildren Jessica, Matthew, Tony (Ashley), Gwen (Chris), Lily; her brother Robbie, and several nieces and nephews who she loved dearly.Our family would like to extend special thanks to Dr. Shane Marshall and Dr. Gordon Campbell who cared for her so well during her last several years on the island.
