Harry McHarg Obituary

Harry Arthur McHargHarry Arthur McHarg, 86, of Winchester, Virginia, formerly a resident of Cavendish Heights, Bermuda, passed away peacefully on Monday, February 25, 2019, at Winchester Medical Centre. Within the last year, Harry moved to Hilltop Assisted Living in Winchester, Virginia to be closer to his oldest son and reside with his wife in a very loving and compassionate community.Harry was born in 1932 in Paget Parish, Bermuda, the son of the late Campbell and Gwendolyn McHarg. He graduated from Saltus Grammar School, Pembroke Parish, Bermuda and was retail manager at Pearman Watlington & Co. Harry was a member of St John's Anglican Church, Bermuda where he remained active in the church until health issues kept him from doing so. After retirement he volunteered at the Bermuda Red Cross. His talent to fix and repair anything paved the way for servicing and repairing the equipment at the Bermuda Red Cross. He would then deliver and set up the needed equipment to residents with temporary or permanent disabilities. Harry was truly an unsung hero with the Bermuda Red Cross. But oh, how he loved the water, sailing, and a good rum swizzle. Having the sun at his back and the wind in his face was heaven on earth to Harry. He was very active in the Jaycees and the Bermuda Offshore Cruising Association. Most of all, Harry was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend to all. He always had a kind and humorous word for everyone, and taught us joy, through service to others. He married Naamah Knight Harris on June 15, 1961 in Winchester, Massachusetts.Surviving with his loving wife of 57 years are sons, David Knight McHarg of Fairfax, Virginia and Warren Harry McHarg (Christine) of Bermuda; and grandchildren, Alexis Helen McHarg and Taylor Knight McHarg of Bermuda.Harry was preceded in death by his sister, Dorothy Hansel, and brother, Edward T. McHarg. Please join us for a celebration of Harry's life Thursday at 1.30pm at Omps Reception Centre, Amherst Chapel, 1600 Amherst Street, Winchester, Virginia 22601.A celebration of Harry's life and interment will take place in Bermuda at a later date.In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Harry's memory to Bermuda Red Cross at https://bermudaredcross.com/donate-money/Please view obituaries and tribute wall at www.ompsfuneralhome.com

How does one say goodbye to such a long-time dear friend ? My heart is heavy as I send sincere condolences to his wife Nay and sons David & Warren, and other family members. Harry was indeed a 'bestest' friend of mine and my late husband Cyril. The four of us spent many happy times together over many years - fun social & boating times, and fun constructive times with the Jaycees/Jayceetes & the Bda Red Cross. Harry's many volunteer contributions to the Island are a testament to the fact that he was indeed 'a son of the soil'. May he RIP - with my beloved 'Hooksie'. Special message to Nay: please know that I am thinking of you with love.
