When I received the call that Mrs. Clarke had passed on to be in the arms of our Lord, I felt very similar to when my own mother died, because Leslie is a true sister of mine.

Jean Tucker Clarke - daughter, sister, wife, mother,  aunt, cousin, and dear friend--from the first day I met her during my first trip to Bermuda from the US during spring break in the late '80s I saw her graciously wear all these crowns. Mr. & Mrs. Clarke opened their home and their hearts to this bunch of wide-eyed, giggly, adventurous group of Leslie's classmates from Emory University. She was a charming  lady with a sweet lilt to her voice, calmness in her presence, compassion in her eyes, comfort in her arms, wisdom in her words and unconditional love and acceptance in her heart.

I felt so loved when Mrs. Clarke came all the way across the ocean to attend my wedding in Louisville, KY. She let me know that she approved of my husband. That meant a lot to me, as did the cedar napkin holder and salt and pepper shakers that she gifted us, which we still have 30 years later! She was our cheerleader - cheering us on in pursuit of our dreams, raising our three children, and encouraging me as I stepped out on faith into the ministry. She would always let me know through Leslie that she was praying for us. And likewise we always prayed for her. I loved the way "Lawrence" rolled off her tongue in that beautiful and rich Bermudian accent when she spoke of her beloved husband. I used to try to imitate it when I said my husband's name so maybe it would convey that kind of love and respect to Sam that Mrs. Clarke obviously had for Mr. Clarke. She was quite a role model for me as a young woman.

Jean Clarke had a reassuring presence, warm and encompassing, as well as a gentle smile that let you know, everything is going to be okay. And even if it´s not, it´s still going to be okay. I know she would want Leslie to hold onto this thought.

Her steadfastness came from her deep faith in God. She lived her life of faith through service to others, not only in Bermuda, but in the US, as well. Mrs. Clarke was generous with her love and poured into the lives of her friends and her daughter's friends-- once a visitor, you were adopted and welcomed into her home and heart.

I will miss you Mrs. Clarke and I'll be here for Leslie!

Rest in heavenly peace

Dear Leslie & Family,
I was saddened to hear of the death of your dear Mom. She was one of the first persons I met when I worked at The Bermuda Telephone Company. I knew of her work at Bethel AME and saw at the Annual Days of the Bermuda Conference Womens Missionary Society. In later years we would be at BTC´s annual Christmas Luncheons for Retirees. She always had a cheerful greeting with her smile! I extend my heartfelt condolences
Blessings,
Elvita
