Dearest Viv, Gordon, Alan, and my many Cousins,
How sad I am that I will not be there to join you in not simply mourning our collective loss, but in celebrating what was so clearly a life well-lived -- and with kindness and a sense of humor! What better tribute and comfort can there be than the many loving messages and remembrances here? I don't recall much of my last day in Bermuda back in 1958, but I do remember my Uncle John, also my godfather, and being with him at a place that was possibly Burland & Co. It must have been because he always made me feel wanted and safe. May he rest in peace! --Cousin Anne, daughter of Brian

To Viv, Gordon and Alan and all John's cherished relations, I wish I could be with you to say goodbye to my much admired Uncle. He was always blazered and he had a naughty twinkle that often turned into one of his very own catch phrases. Love from Eleanor David and Hebe (Daughter of Rosamond)

Dear Alan and Gordon and Burland Family:
My deepest sympathies to you at this time of great loss. Your father was a great, caring man whom I met in 1950 as an apprentice mason. I was 13 years old.
He encouraged me to read many books on construction at G.H. Burland & Company. Many of the lessons he taught me have enriched my life and I often think of those good years working for him. He was a great guide and friend to me.
My prayers and thoughts are with you and your family.

Dear Vivian,
I am saddened to hear of John's passing and extend my sympathy to you. Of course, I remember his work at St. Anne's and his commitment years ago to the work carried out in the Church and with the Sunday School children.
May you find some comfort in others' recogniton of his many contributions - often quietly done behind the scenes - for Bermudians as well as to your memories of happy times you shared together.
