Colonel John D. 'Jack' Prendergast (Retired)
1916 - 2014
Col. Jack Prendergast was born in Minneapolis, MN, September 20, 1916, of Leo Theodore and Bernice Helen Newsum Prendergast. Raised in St. Louis, MO., he attended Christian Brothers High School, and upon graduation with his twin brother, Tom, enrolled in the University of Oklahoma where he earned a BS degree in Petroleum Engineering.
Jack was commissioned as a 2LT in the US Army in 1940, serving in World War II and Korea, retiring in 1965. His tours of duty included Japan, and Washington DC. He was awarded The Legion of Merit with Oak Leaf Cluster, The Bronze Star, and TheFrench Croix de Guerre. Subsequently, he pursued a second career, retiring from Volvo Heavy Truck Company in 1985.
Jack is survived by his wife Shirley, of Palm Coast FL; daughter Marilynne "Sue" Burtenshaw (Rev. Noel) of Atlanta GA; stepson Timothy Cunningham (Nancy); five grandchildren; four step- grandchildren; and special friends Betty Todd, Serelina and Charles Ferris, Joni Stevens and Rosemary Wolfe, who provided exceptionally kind and loving assistance over many years.
Col. Prendergast died at the grand age of 98 on October 6, 2014. He was preceded in death by his twin brother, Col. Joseph T. "Tom" Prendergast (Ret.). The brothers were parishioners of Annunciation of the Lord Catholic Church, Decatur, AL, where Jack will be remembered at the regular weekly liturgy celebrated by Rev. Ray Remke, Pastor, on Thursday, November 6, 2014, 10 a.m. Interment, with full military honors, will take place at a later date in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia.
