MAURICE JOHNSON Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Maurice Keith Johnson in his 80th year. Maurice was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle. He was an active member of the community with his days at the Bermuda Technical Institute, rising to lieutenant in the Bermuda Fire Service, his managing of the building department at Gorham's Limited and in his involvement in the building and sailing of boats. In his final years he was an integral part of the Bermuda Pilot Gig Club which he loved immensely, it brought him great joy and satisfaction. Maurice was a much loved and respected member of the community and well known for his knowledge on most subjects especially Bermuda history and had a deep desire to share that knowledge with anyone who was interested. He was always giving of his time, his love and his many stories and shared them all freely. Maurice is survived by his loving wife Lynda, his children Michelle (Russell), Paul (Valerie) and Matthew and his grandchildren Nicholas, Daniel and Natalie. He was the son of the late Henry and Ella Johnson and is pre-deceased by sisters Gladys and Estelle. He is survived by brothers Donald, Carl (Suzi), Stanley and Malcolm (Carol), sisters Doris and Margaret, sister-in-law Gina Flood and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and countless friends in Bermuda and overseas. A Celebration of Maurice's life will take place at a later date.AMIS Memorial Chapel & Crematory

Maurice my friend we will all miss you, your infectious smile, hearty laugh and the multitude of stories that you would regale us with. Your enthusiasm was apparent from the very first time our Shelby Cobra Club met you and you quickly became a staple at our get-togethers and rides whenever you were in Georgia (USA) visiting Michelle and Russell.

Jen and I truly enjoyed meeting up with you when you were here and regret that we never found the time to come see you in Bermuda, that would have been a lot of fun ! I know the whole Cobra crew here will miss you dearly.

As when you went for a ride in these cars to your sailing and many of your passions...may you Feel the Wind in your Hair for eternity my friend.

Much Love,

Pig & Jen

To Lynda and Family I send my deepest condolences. I was hoping I could attend the memorial at the Club but due to unforeseen circumstances I had to change my plans. I am really going to miss our coffee get togethers and keeping up with all the news at the Gig Club. We didn't always agree, but we sure got the jobs done! Gonna miss him!

I only knew Maurice for a short time but the news of his passing shocked and saddened me deeply - I have family in the pilot gig club, and also knew Maurice from the sailing community - his knowledge about sailing and rigging was integral wisdom in the restoration of boats belonging to two people very close to me - my friend Dom Smith (Bluestocking) and my boyfriend Thomas Mahoney (Flibcote). After a long period of restoration, Maurice joined us for the maiden voyage of Flibcote, my boyfriend's Venus 42. It was a true privilege to absorb the stories he told and the knowledge he shared on that trip - it was easy to tell you were in the presence of someone steeped in Bermuda sailing tradition. He knew how to spin a yarn, and his enthusiasm for fitting the pilot gigs with sailing rigs was magnetic. I am thankful that I was able to know Maurice a little bit before his passing and regret I wasn't able to absorb more of his historical and sailing knowledge.

Sending condolences to Lynda, Michelle and family - with love from the Whitehead family (Horace's clan). My favourite saying from Maurice - "We don't have a family tree - it's more like an Oleander bush!" Such a loving, funny, generous spirited, knowledgeable man - who shared his love of sailing, boats, history and family with all. Respectfully submitted with love from cousin Sundée.
