Such grief, Mervyn has left us!
For most of the 5 years that we lived in Bermuda he and his family were our friends. We feel so lucky that we got to see him again when we visited again just a few months ago. His body had changed, but not as much as ours and his dry sense of humor was totally intact.
What good memories we had. There were his and Audrey's forays into Washington DC, where we live now and where he brought a class of his pupils. He called them his 10year old sponges, so eager to learn. He loved those kids, he loved his Audrey, his family and he loved life.
What a loss for all of us. Bermuda will never be the same without Mervyn.
In deep sorrow.

To Audrey and Family:We think of you every day and know that words just don't help too much and that time doesn't heal very quickly. That Mervyn is not here any more does not mean that he has gone - his spirit will go on for ever. You will hear his quiet whisper and feel a gentle touch on your shoulder, and feel his presence. Hi is just too good to disappear.
Our love, Audrey and John Morbey.

Mervyn was one of the first people to welcome me to Bermuda in 1979 when I arrived. We had a country, a university and a profession in common. A lovely man who will be very much missed. My condolences to Audrey and all his family.

To the Moorhead Family,
We met Mervyn & Audrey for the first time when we met by chance in Kenya on holiday, we had our children with us and we all enjoyed the fun and company that their presence provided. Later, the two of us travelled to Bermuda and we're taken around the lovely island by Mervyn & Audrey, it was a wonderful week when we were shown great hospitality. Finally and thankfully, we shared a lunch together some three years ago during one of their visits back to N.Ireland. Despite a certain frailty, Mervyn was his usual fun self and the years just rolled back.
Thank you so much for your friendship, we know how much you will be missed by your adoring family and our sincere condolences go out to you all,
Sincerely, Bill & Toni Sproule

Our fifty years of friendship with Mervyn and Audrey span from their time of arrival in Bermuda.
Mervyn was an easy person to get along with; common sense and an honest approach to life, a strong intellect including a love for the theatre made time spent with Mervyn always interesting, and his quiet humour brightened meetings. Mervyn was a good athlete and thoroughly enjoyed the field hockey he played here in the sixties and the golf we played together at St Georges. He was a dedicated educator firmly believing in good old-fashioned basics which he did not hesitate to promote when education appeared to be failing in Bermuda. A Justice of the Peace, from the many tributes received in this legacy he was obviously held in high regard for his services at the Juvenile Court.
Mervyn spent his life doing what he was trained to do and in a totally dedicated and meaningful fashion which also brought him pleasure and satisfaction. He was also proud of and interested in his students and many will recall the efforts he mad to make them achieve the goals they may not have thought possible.
The sadness at his sudden departure will be felt by all who knew him. His pleasure at spending time with his grandchildren will leave its mark and to Audrey, Kerri and Heather and family we send our love and thoughts and know that they will get some comfort with the proud memories of Mervyn that everyone has expressed.

We called him Mervyn, we called him Dad, Pops, we called him PopPops. We called him Mr. Moorhead and in some cases Sir. Many knew him as Merve the Swerve or Captain Merlot. We all have a story to tell about my dad. This is mine.
Stewart Gardiner Mervyn Moorhead was born in County Tyrone in Northern Ireland on June 4, 1935. He grew up in Castlerock, a lovely seaside town. Following in the footsteps of his mother, he chose to be a teacher. He attended Queens University and then Stranmillis College in Belfast. It was at this time, he met a beautiful young woman called Audrey at a bus stop one evening. As fate would have it they were both traveling to the same party and so began the next chapter. A few years later my dad would find an ad for a job opening in Bermuda. St. George's Grammar school was looking for an English teacher. Engaged by this time, Audrey flew to Bermuda to join her beloved Mervyn in the spring and they were married here at Christ Church in Warwick on April 3, 1961.
The following year, daughter number one was born. That's me! By now both of them were working at St. George's Grammar School. My dad also taught phys-ed to the boys which he enjoyed immensely. There were many a school championship bestowed on St. Georges Grammar School for cricket and football. Although drama was not part of the curriculum this was, by far, his favourite subject and as a result school productions were always spectacular. How many of you will remember the use of a real live horse in his production of Sleeping Beauty?
All of the fun aside, he was very serious about the importance of an excellent education. He taught the eleven year olds those critical subjects for transitioning into secondary school. Having been a student in his class, he meant business and many here today can agree we all got into the schools of our choice with his no-nonsense approach.
Later St George's Grammar school would change to St. George's Preparatory School and not long after my father would become the school principal. Even though he was now in an administrative role, he longed for those classroom days but would still be seen out on the cricket pitch sporting those favoured bright Bermuda shorts and funky fun ties. There was a mutual respect shared between he and his staff and despite his administrative role, he was extremely fond of all of them.
My sister Heather would complete our family and she too would attend St. Georges Prep. They would drive to school together daily on dad's bright yellow Chappy scooter; Heather in a matching yellow helmet!
I must have driven him bananas when I was a student yet he was always so patient and willing to guide me in the right direction with my work. I am sure he breathed a huge sigh of relief when I graduated from college. Dad and I shared a love for languages. While I learned Spanish, he spoke French and German fluently and in later years took Italian at the Bermuda College.
Larry and I were married in 1991. Larry and my dad became fast friends as they had similar teasing senses of humour. They both loved a game of golf and more so the friendly competition once American football season started. My dad adored him.
I had my first child in 1995. Eliot Stewart was named after my dad and instantly was the apple of his eye. Having lived in a household of three women he must have been delighted to finally have a male counterpart. And what a duo they were! PopPops as he became known used to carry a briefcase with Eliot's photo taped to the outside of it. He and Eliot would frequently sit on de wall along Mullet Bay watching cars go by. Later they shared a passion for history and would spend many hours discussing past wars and present conflicts. They were such great buddies.
Three years later his first granddaughter, Alison, was born. He was thrilled as he was a huge softie when it came to girls. He adored his time with Alison especially when it came to building sand castles or reading to her. Alison took up dance at age three and it gave dad such joy to watch her on stage each year. We feel blessed that he got to see her this past June at her major recital. He was so very proud of her.
.
Dad loved the stage whether it was watching a musical; Les Miserables was his favourite, or performing on it himself. He was an active member of BMDS and took part in several productions. I think Richard the third was our favourite?!
Dad had a yearning for knowledge. All kinds of knowledge! His favourite television show was Jeopardy. We marveled at how often he knew all the right answers. For three years running, he was on the winning team of the Brains Of Bermuda trivia competition. When Alison would have a tricky homework question, she would always say I'll call PopPops he'll know the answer. His head was full of information. How does one know all this stuff?
When mum and dad were in college they spent their summers youth hostelling in Europe. This would be the beginning of an infinite passion for travel. Once they retired they became frequent cruisers on Seabourn and have made firm friends with people from all over the globe. On their fiftieth wedding anniversary they did a world cruise. There are not many places they have not visited.
We are a close family and valued our time together. We loved to go boating, play scrabble and backgammon or charades, challenge each other to water polo in our pool, and have fondue suppers. Heather and dad were huge ABBA fans and Mama Mia was a constant at our house. Mum and dad were fantastic dancers! Mum insists she taught dad how to jive! They tried their hands at square dancing and even some Scottish dancing here at this church hall. Bar none the best was when dad hit the dance floor when there was reggae or soca music playing. He certainly had some signature moves!
My Dad was a member of the Lions Club for many years and was given the prestigious Paul Harris Fellow award by the Rotary club for his contribution to education in Bermuda. Over the past seven years he has been a member of family court where he enjoyed the company of his lovely Bermudian ladies on the panel.
We as a family are overwhelmed by the incredible outpouring of love and respect for my dad. The phone calls, the emails, the personal messages that have shown the impact he had on so many has filled our hearts. He was a sweet loving husband to his Amorous Audrey and a kind and gentle soul to his Kerry the Berry and his Heather the Feather. We love him so dearly and will miss him infinitely.
- Tribute given by me at my dad's service on August 4, 2014, at Christ Church in Warwick, Bermuda.

We first laid eyes on Mervyn on the open deck of a Seabourn ship as we were sailing through the Baltic Sea. In his right hand he was carrying a big ice cream cone which he licked with unbridled enthusiasm. The pleasure it brought him was obvious. We nodded at one another and moved on. Later during that cruise, once we had become acquaintances first, then friends, we noticed that when he wasn't licking at an ice cream cone he was sipping a glass of Merlot. His good friends on Seabourn always referred to him as Captain Merlot. To us those two delicacies represented the different sides of his unique personality, ice cream the sweetness of his nature and Merlot the picquancy of his wit and intellect. Mervyn was a pleasure to be around, especially with Audrey at his side, The love the two exhibited for one another was a true inspiration. There was nothing fake or manufactured about it. It came straight from the heart and radiated throughout any room they were occupying. Over the years we shared many dinners, cocktail hours, tea times, trivia games and always Mervyn surprised us with an unexpected quip, a pointed observation and once in a while, some juicy gossip. There aren't many people one looks forward to seeing over and over again. Mervyn was surely one of them.

We met Mervyn and Audrey in 2002, on our first Seabourn cruise, and quickly formed a friendship that has lasted through the years.
Mervyn and Audrey knew how to have fun. We laughed more, we danced more, and we indulged ourselves more, whenever we were with them. Mervyn and Audrey knew how to live a full life, and they inspired us (and probably many others) to do the same.
We'll remember Mervyn's smile, how he so openly expressed his love for Audrey, how much he enjoyed his Merlot, and how serious he was about trivia. We're so thankful our lives crossed.
We'll never forget you Mervyn.

Mr Moorhead was the Headmaster at St George's Prep where all my children went to primary school.. My family has known Mr Moorhead and his family for over 40 years. He was a first class headmaster and previously a teacher at the Prep. I cannot find the words to express how he was as an educator other than Awesome He was always fair and used the "tough love " approach at St George's Prep. There was not a youngster who did not respect him and fear him, a bit, which kept even the worst mischief makers in line . There are many individuals in Bermuda and elsewhere who can attribute their success in life to Mr Moorheads guidance. He will be sorely missed in St George's. everyone loved him ,his wit, humour, sense of fairness and dedication to education and to Family Court. My heart goes out to Audrey, Kerri , Heather and their families . He was taken too soon , May God bless him and his family.

Mr Mervyn Moorhead JP has served as a member of the Special Court for over seven years during which time he captivated numerous families with his unique wit, wisdom and "tough love" approach. His contribution and passion for this Court and Bermuda including all it's people , no matter their race, background or economic standing , must be recognized as exceptional . He will truly be missed .On behalf of Magistrate Stoneham and Magistrate Chin and the Family Support team , heartfelt condolences go out to the family in these trying times.

To have been fortunate to enjoy the company of Mervyn is indeed a great honour and priviledge.
We met Mervyn and Audrey on wonderful cruise. A chance meeting helping Audrey to work her Ipad grew into a wonderful friendship. Mervyn (Captain Merlot) was always seen with that cheeky chuckle in his face as he got up to more mischief.
He loved his wife Audrey and his family who he regularly talked about.
Mervyn was a full of life character and heart and soul of the party.
Very rarely does one come across someone on a holiday who makes such an impact in your life. Mervyn was one of those people. Intelligent, kind and enthusing laughter with his antics.
He will be sadly missed by everyone who knew him, especially his dear loving wife Audrey and their family. Our hearts and thoughts are with you.
Mervyn was a very rare bright diamond star and I am sure he is shining on you all now and watching over you. R.I.P. Mervyn

Dear Mummy the Rummy, Kerry the Berry and Heather the Feather,
Merv the Swerve will be sadly missed by us all, an end of an era for us. Merv has been part of our lives for so long, and he will be forever in our thoughts. Our hearts go out to you guys - a wonderful soul mate, father and friend. I remember the many conversations Mervyn and I had sitting in the garden of Northwinds, him expounding on something close to his heart, then images of him up on the roof, painting away in the heat, or his head stuck in the cupboard under the apartment stairs, cursing while trying to fix the water pump The Christmases we spent together and his enthusiasm over party games. I remember his boat, Leprechaun, and he and I sinking it in the harbour to protect it from the imminent hurricane. His barbecues in the back garden, and so many more memories of a great guy that I was proud to call a good friend (and even family) God bless you Merv, you were an inspiration to us all.

Dear Audrey, just a note to tell you how much we enjoyed meeting Mervyn and to know what a great person he was. I never knew how talented he was until I read all the kind words that had been written about him. I wish we had known him better. I liked the words that described his tribute to education- if everyone had had the opportunity to have been educated by him the world would have been a better place. I know how hard it was to lose him but God had a plan for him that sent him to a better resting place. All our love, Peter and Beryl

From: "Heather Moorhead"
Subject: Dad
To my dear, sweet Pops,
....full of jokes, always smiling, always so much fun, a true legend, best
headmaster ever, gorgeous Merv, awesome uncle, a blazing spirit, a man of
strong principles and one of life's true gentlemen. These are just a very few
descriptions of you sent by your wonderful friends and family this week. But
the one that struck me the most was, "Simply the Best". These three little
words describe you perfectly because you were...simply the best!!!!
I was always your "Heather the feather" and if I was ever sad you would always
say, "Cheer up Feather, it's going to be alright", and it always was. I will
miss sitting together on the couch doing our crossword puzzles, our scrabble
games which quite often became very competitive and watching our favourite tv
show, Jeopardy. I always loved it when I managed to get an answer in quicker
than you!
You may have been Irish to the bones but you sure knew how to dance like an
Island boy.Where there was soca or reggae to be heard there you were in your
hot pink Bermuda shorts girating those hips and having a great time. Who else
would be starting a conga line and getting a whole room full of people up
dancing to , "Are you feeling hot , hot ,hot", but yours truly. You really did
bring a room alive when you walked in, more than anyone I have ever met.
I remember on my graduation day you gave me the biggest hug ever, as you were
so great at, and told me that I had made you the proudest dad ever that day.
That meant the world to me and I will continue to make you proud each and
every day.
Our little Fergus and Saoirse are going to miss their pop-pops terribly. You
loved all your grandchildren more than life itself. Fergus told me that he
will always remember Pop-pops for making him the yummiest popsicles every day.
Nana, you will have some big shoes to fill there! "My little Saoirse", as you
would call her, always had a special place in your heart and she would bring
you such happiness every time you saw her. She did boss you around terribly
and it was just last week when we had a laugh together when you said,"Heather,
she really is a terrible two!!!!" She sure is Pop-pops!!!
Our last evening together we spent laying in bed smiling and singing Abba
songs- what more could a girl ask for! That will forever remain in my heart .
We will all take care of mum each and every day, don't you worry.
This has been the hardest time in my life and I am missing you already more than words can describe but I will remember your words,
"Cheer up Feather, it'll be all right".
Cheers Pops. Hope you are enjoying a lovely glass of Merlot
Love your Heather the Featherxoxo

I have known you & Mervyn for, what seems like forever. What a great guy he was. A terrific teacher, & a wonderful father & grandfather.
How lucky you were to have had him for such a long time, over half a century !
You'll miss him forever, but hopefully over time it will become easier to bear. If you need a shoulder to cry on or a joke to make you laugh, I am always here for you.

How privileged we were to have been mervyn's brother in law. He was surely one of life's gentlemen and scholars. His ascerbic ulster wit and charm endeared him to everyone. Few people are blessed with charisma like mervyn was. Weddings, cruises, dinner parties - it didn't matter - everyone vied to be in Mervyn's company. He had la Joie de vie - and everyone wanted share. Brother thank you for the cherished memories of the fun times we shared, when the tears of laughter rolled down our cheeks. You came to Celebrate our daughter Gail's wedding. You presented the groom David with a pair of the ubiquitous pink Bermuda shorts and instructions to don them there and then. As Gail posted. "Uncle Mervyn you were simply the Best". Our love, Best Wishes and Prayers to My dear sister Audrey, nieces Kerri and Heather and families. Adieu my friend, Adieu.

We don't wish to say goodbye to you Mervyn; as we feel that you are still with us. You and Audrey became part of our family as we did of yours. We cherish the time we spent together; so much fun and laughter. Thank goodness you were able to spend time with us, in Kent, last Summer; sitting by the pool sipping wine and re-living so many happy memories. St Georges grammar school was lucky to have a Headmaster such as you and we are all the better for having known you. Elizabeth & Brian

Audrey, Kerri and Heather,
I remember clearly the fame that St. George's Prep achieved through Mervyn's inspired philosophy on education and strongly held beliefs. Everyone at the time hoped their child would make it into his school and he was truly a legend in the Bermuda system. Maurice has written separately Audrey, but I wanted to be numbered amongst the outpouring of public accolades as well. Sorry we were unable to get to you in the Church and give you a hug.

Mr. Moorhead was my classroom teacher at St. George's Grammar School in my final year (1970). One day he began
constructing an adult size wooden box, the entrance of which was covered by a curtain. He told us not to peek until he gave the go ahead because inside would be the most valuable and the most amazing thing in the world. Imagine our surprise when, weeks later, after hearing much hammering, etc., we took turns entering the box and saw nothing but a mirror hanging inside. Thank you Mr. Moorhead - I shall never forget the message you passed along to each of us that day. With much gratitude to an amazing teacher. My condolences to Mrs. Moorhead, Kerri, Heather and their families.

Don't think of him as gone away
his journey's just begun,
life holds so many facets
this earth is only one.
Just think of him as resting
from the sorrows and the tears
in a place of warmth and comfort
where there are no days and years.
Think how he must be wishing
that we could know today
how nothing but our sadness
can really pass away.
And think of him as living
in the hearts of those he touched...
for nothing loved is ever lost
and he was loved so much.

No one can prepare you for a loss; it comes like a swift wind, but take comfort in knowing that Mr. Moorhead is now resting in the arms of our Lord.

Dearest Audrey,
We were so saddened to hear of Mervyn's passing. He was "no-nonsense" principal who knew how to bring out the best in his students - and staff. Our two children had him as their principal and I had the privilege of teaching at Prep under his leadership. Mervyn was as unique as they come! Our whole family has so many fond memories of him and so often we speak of his "firmness but fairness".
Unfortunately, we are off the island and will be unable to attend the funeral. Please know that you are in our prayers at this difficult time.

Very sad to hear that Mervyn has passed away. As close friends of my Mum and Dad, Mervyn and Audrey kept a weather eye out for me when I first arrived in Bermuda from Northern Ireland as a wide-eyed, fresh-faced policeman. Many years later I still clearly recall Mervyn's warmth and good humour. My deepest sympathy to Audrey and the whole of the Moorhead clan. Mark Patterson
