Dearest Elaine,
I am sure you have been overwhelmed with the response to the very sad news about Michael. I first became aware from reading the RBYC announcement.
I read the fulsome eulogy from the Coral Beach Club also giving an insight on the remarkable contribution he made to Bermuda during his lifetime.
I feel very fortunate to have had a few minutes of time with him when Gaynor and I visited you in January. He seemed very calm and fully cognisant of what was happening in Bermuda.
You have a wonderful family that I am sure will rally round and support you during this difficult time.
Gaynor and I send sincere condolences and hope that we will be able to see you again before too long.
Much love from
Christopher

A wonderful human who rendered a perfect 'inning' to both humanity and all areas of Nature...Well done Mr Darling RIP

Sad times come with such a passing but the Colonel would not have allowed it to overcome the positivity in the world or the good that remained to be done. He was an enlarged portrayal of some of the best Bermudian males and shared with me stories and witticisms and more that was part of the seasoning process of an earlier ritual of entering manhood. I will miss the thought that the source that he was is no longer just a phone call away. My world is diminished by his demise. To his wife and children, especially Peter, I send sincere condolences at your loss and my appreciation for the time that I had with him.

Dear Elaine, Forster, and Family,
Please accept my sincere condolences on the loss of dear Michael, an Officer and Gentlemen, always!
He contributed so much to Bermuda particularly to the Bda Regiment, the National Trust, nature, and everything gardening. He was on the Fundraising Committee of "Why It Matters" Capital Campaign to raise funds for the Acute Care Wing of the KEMH of which I was Chair. He worked diligently and as a result raised a lot of money and never miss a meeting. He always had an interest and time for those he knew. He will be sorely missed. Happily, Michael is no longer suffering and now resting in peace in God's gentle hands.
Rick joins me in sending our our sincere sympathy, and strength and blessing you and the family.
Fondly,
Jane Spurling

Dear Peter and the Darling family,

Sending condolences on the sad news of Col. Darling's passing. I looked forward to seeing him at Government House functions when he would share another story of his time in the Regiment with my father. He always spoke fondly of my dad, and the feeling was mutual. It was a pleasure to know Col. Darling, an officer and a gentleman with a sly sense of humour! I hope your family will be comforted by the lives he touched and the wonderful memories he made.

Dear Elaine - deep condolences on the passing of Michael, the epitome of a gentleman.
Gone with him are memories of the Bermuda I knew as a child in the 1950s - and earlier. No cars, plentiful cedar trees, formal Thursdays (or were they Wednesdays?).

Dear Elaine, Forster, Holly and family, I am so very sorry to hear this sad news. I can't think of a time that Colo El Darling was not a part of my life, he was such a good friend of my fathers from the time they were badly behaved teenagers. He was an invariably kind and gentle man and Bermuda seems a diminished place without him. We are so very sorry for your loss
