Mrs Edness was a big influence on my early childhood. Through her I learned so much about Bermuda's cultural traditions of all types. My fondest memories include seeing her in church each Sunday and stopping at her little store, AJ Edness Grocery, on South Shore near the end of a hot summer bicycle ride with my sister. Thank you, Mrs Edness, for the great memories.

Dear Maureen and family,
I was so sorry to hear of the passing of your mother.
What a legacy! It is truly remarkable that you were able to spend so many wonderful years with your mother. I know you share so many loving and fascinating years with her as she worked as an ambassador for Bermuda everywhere she went. You have so many fond memories to keep you joyful for many years.
It has been a long time since I have seen you or been able to catch up with you and your family. We were at McMaster together before we went our separate ways and I now live in Cohutta, Georgia. Our children are grown and living their lives.
I met your mother once when I was in Bermuda and was pleased to know her briefly. She was unforgettable and I wanted to express my sympathy to you and your family. I know she will be remembered and missed by many folks in Bermuda. My heart goes out to you at this time. Remember the love, laughter and good times with your mom and may the peace of God be with all the family.
Sincerely,
Linda (Joell) Smith

Sincerest condolences to Maureen and all the near and far family- - - especially noting the De Shields lineage. Aunt Myrtle was an anchor in our lodge and an oracle and a rock to me personally as I muddled through the lodge history. These were only her later contributions. The records and historical documents would show many of her other acts of benevolence. She truly loved her lodge and her fellow officers and members. She is entitled to unnumbered acknowledgements and acclamations of there lodge but alas we are few and unable to send her off in the most befitting manner of a Samaritan who has no equal. She fills our hearts as she filled the lodge. She will always be remembered as long as the Prince Royal Union Lodge stands.
So we say a simple salute to our grand sister.
A simple thank-you to all the family.

It was a great pleasure to meet and talk with Mrs. Edness, many years ago. I think at that time she was 103. I wanted to get her memories of the people and the area, as I was researching my Saunders family, who owned the yellow house bordering Billy Goat Hill.
My utmost condolences to Mrs. Edness family.

My condolences to Mrs. Edness' family on the passing of your mother/grandmother/great-grandmother. I have the fondest memories of her - she was my first boss, hiring me to work in her store the summer I was 12. I remember the first week I got paid, running home to show my parents my crisp $20 bill! She lived a long and remarkable life, and will be missed.

What a lovely lady and sorry to learn of her passing. She had a long and blessed life who was always regal in appearance and demeanor and, as others have eloquently said, was a pillar of South Shore, Warwick. I too enjoyed many an afternoon at the Edness store buying necessities like Cadbury Fruit and Nut!! I am honoured to have known her and will keep her memory for the rest of my life.

Dear Mo, I am so sorry to hear about your Mom's passing. She was an amazing lady, and I was happy to have met her. I was visiting from Canada many years ago, and invited to a beautiful tea party you were having on the verandah to celebrate your Mom's 90th birthday. We had a wonderful afternoon looking at the ocean, laughing, talking, listening to stories Myrtle told us and enjoying gorgeous weather. At one point your Mom looked at you and said "Mo, do you know what I want as a birthday gift? I want to take piano lessons!" Not only was I surprised (to say the least) at this request, it said a lot about what an amazing, interesting person your mom was! I still think of her beautiful laughter and lovely Bermudian accent asking for piano lessons at 90 years of age! Hugs to you, Sandi Davis, Westport, ONT.

My deepest condolences to Maureen and family, and to everyone who knew Mrs. Edness. What a "Lady", in my youth spending time at her store on South Shore Road talking with her, listening to her stories, or watching her swim early in the morning. She was a major part of the fabric of the South Shore in Warwick and will be missed dearly.
