Nancy Scurlock Obituary
The long, fascinating life of NANCY MORRISON SCURLOCK, 92, ended at her home in Seattle, Washington on November 4, 2023 with her daughters by her side. Nancy was born on November 10, 1930 in Washington DC to mechanic William Robert Morrison of Elizabethtown, Kentucky and homemaker Mary Ellen Ainsworth Morrison of Wallsend, England. A graduate of Fairfax High School in Virginia, Nancy worked hard to send herself to Radford College where she excelled in English and earned a degree in Secondary Education. Nancy dressed for success and often recounted how she designed and made clothes she wore as a young woman. Nancy taught English then worked at fashion magazines in New York City, The Pentagon, General Dynamics Corporation and Atlantic Research Corporation to name a few.In 1953 Nancy married aviator and writer Ernest W "Nick" Yonick, Jr, father of Nancy's first daughter. In 1962, Nancy married Dr Arch Chilton Scurlock, the founder and President of Atlantic Research Corporation and the couple were blessed with three more daughters. A highly competent office manager, Nancy transferred these skills to the running of large households in both Virginia and Bermuda. Nancy was an energetic, organized and productive problem-solver with a flair for fashion, interior design, landscaping, and flawlessly executed family parties and weddings. She was gregarious, generous, keenly interested in other people and never forgot a face. An avid reader, Nancy appreciated the precise use of language, grammar, etymology, the derivation of idiomatic expressions, and closely followed politics and current events. She was a supportive, loving, affectionate and empathetic friend, daughter, sister, wife, mother, stepmother, grandmother (Nana) and great-grandmother.Since 1962 Bermuda has been a beloved second home to Mrs. Scurlock. Happy years vacationing at The Coral Beach Club with her family inspired the purchase of Summertide in Tucker's Town where she forged many close friendships and fond memories. Nancy especially enjoyed ladies' doubles tennis, swims at Frick Beach and Baby Beach, sunsets over Castle Harbour, dining at Tom Moore's Tavern, listening to Calypso music at Mid Ocean Club barbeques on Natural Arches beach and navigating Bermuda with the advice of her best friend, artist Norma Christensen.Nancy was preceded in death by her first husband Nick Yonick in 1976, her husband Arch Scurlock in 2002, her stepson Marvin Curtis Scurlock in 2012 and her brother George Robert Morrison in 2019.Nancy is survived by her sister Mary Ellen Morrison Stalvey of Fredericksburg, Virginia, her sister-in-law Lorraine Head Morrison of Virginia Beach and four daughters Tracey Ainsworth Yonick (Richard Lane) of Seattle, Washington; Mary Scurlock Adamson (Peter Adamson) of Portland, Oregon; Nancy Scurlock Collins (Michael Collins) of Bermuda and Margaret Ann Scurlock of New York City as well as stepson Arch Chilton Scurlock Jr. of Annandale, Virginia and stepdaughter Susan Scurlock Theiler (Mike Theiler) of Alexandria, Virginia. She is mourned by eight grandchildren Madeleine Collins Chenoweth (Keith Chenoweth), Nic Lane (Rachel Yim), Colby Adamson, Emily Collins, Amelia Adamson (Sam Selig), Deirdre Collins, William Collins and James Collins (Sarah Jane Jones Collins) as well as great granddaughter Celine Chenoweth. Two step-grandchildren Aaron Scurlock and Alysia Desbiens (Shawn Thompson) also survive her as well as seven step-great-grandchildren Ashley Scurlock, Brian Scurlock, Joshua Scurlock, Lindsey Scurlock, Jay Thompson, Claire Thompson, Ryan Thompson and Dash Thompson.Services are being planned in Virginia and Nancy's ashes will be interred with the remains of her husband of 39 years, a World War II Navy veteran, at Culpeper National Cemetery. In her honor, the family requests donations be made to The Bermuda National Trust or The Bermuda Zoological Society.
