Roger and Val Ackman
January 17, 2012
A late entry in this remembrance book for Dick. We did not write last year because thankfully, we were able to be all together. We have many memories of Dick sailing in Bermuda, feasting on lobsters in Shediac and happy Chistmases at Lac Marois. He was such a presence on such occasions and is so sadly missed - most especially, of course, by Neil and his beloved family. Sadly, we cannot have him back but he will live forever in our hearts.
Love always, Roger and Val

I think about Uncle Dick often when I think of my Dad. Both were larger than life to me - big teddy bears with a taste for adventure and fine cigars. I hope they are enjoying both together as they keep a close eye on all of us. Big hugs, Connie

Dear Neil,
A whole year and a bit later I am adding my words of sympathy. Dick is still and will always be missed by the entire Ackman family. I think of him so often and treasure the drawing you gave me when I was with you for the funeral. He sits along side Doug...hopefully they continue to be soul mates in a better place. Love Pat

We realized from the first time they met that Neil and Dick had the foundation for a loving and caring relationship. During our trips to Bermuda and their trips to Brule we have been privileged to witness their life together blossom. Through attending their wedding, growing to know and love their three children and families, and experiencing their hospitality in both Bermuda and at Brule, we witnessed a wonderful union.
Our deepest sympathy to Neil and all Dick's family. His untimely death is a shock to everyone. We hope you can remember all the wonderful things about Dick as a husband and father. We will always remember him as a friend who enjoyed life to the fullest.
God Bless You All
Love from

Dear Neil and family,
Dick was an inspiration to many people from all walks of life and he will not only be missed by his family but also by the many friends that he and you, Neil, made during his lifetime. The words "kind" "warmhearted" "jolly"
"thoughtful of others"and "always willing to help" describe Dick.
You two became known to us through our children and initially their schooling; the friendship continued to grow and you both will always have a special place in our hearts.
Much love. Jo and Stan

Neil, Dawn, Rick and Doug:
There are so many things to say about Dick. So many things that made lasting impressions on his family and everyone around him. We struggle at times like these to find words to describe everything he was and will be remembered for. Dick taught me a valuable lesson that I hope one day I can pass on to my kids.
Rick and I were 16 years old and Dick finally let Rick take out his beloved Katimavik all by himself. Rick was so excited and proud as he sailed his friends around the Great Sound. His dad finally trusted him enough to let him use the boat! However, on the way back to the Yacht Club, Rick ran Katimavik hard aground. We limped into the dock over an hour late and Rick was terrified to tell his dad what had happened. When he did, Dick simply smiled and said, "Don't worry son, you have no idea how many times I've done that myself."
That lesson in forgiveness and patience is something I will always attribute to Dick. I hope all of you find peace and comfort in knowing that he was a man of substance and integrity.

We were privileged to be close friends and intertwined families for over 40years and many were the adventures and happy times we shared, usually with Dick leading the way. We hope the outpouring of love and tributes to him will be of some support to you, There was never a better friend nor team ( with you).We are grateful to have a huge treasure chest of happy memories to dip into to ease his loss and to share together when the time is right. "Ode to Richard Kempe"
‘Sailing…Sailing…Over the bounding main’…
From dawn till dusk, and moonlight’s beams,
His spirit will remain…
Cresting on Bermuda’s waves,
And glistening, azure seas,
Forever one… with the ocean’s lure,
And the waft of a starboard breeze…
He will be missed, but remembered by his‘Optimist’-ic legacy, endowed to the youthful fleets he has nurtured so dedicatedly, and we were honoured, when his award was presented to our granddaughter, at the Green Fleet Prizegiving.
“Tom Coleman presented a ‘Special Award’ ~
(kindly donated by a stalwart of Bermuda Sailing, Dick Kempe)
to: Lilly Barboza for her outstanding Optimist sailing.”

Hello, Dear Neil,
Having just lost a dear cousin last week, I share your feelings of loss without Dick. He was always such a pater to the IOD family. When we came to Bermuda for Laura Butterfield's wedding, he loaned us Gaylord to take other Boston Friends on a tour of the Great Sound. Preparing sailing instructions for an IOD worlds, he was a valued partner in avoiding problems we might have created for ourselves. And finally your wonderful hospitality to Teri and me visiting you during the last Worlds gave us a picture into your world in happier times.
A hug across the ocean to you all.

Imagine that you are standing at the seashore a mild summer evening and looking at a beautiful ship
which is being prepared for departure.
The sails are set. When the evening breeze is coming the sails fills and the boat slowly is moving out of the
harbour, out on the open sea.
Your eyes are following the boat when it is going towards the sunset. It become smaller and smaller and
at last it disappear as a small spot at the horizon.
Then you hear from someone at your side “Now he has left us”
Left us for what? The picture that he has being smaller and smaller and then disappear is just as you see it.
In reality he is as big and beautiful as when he was at the dock.
Just as when you hear the voice saying that he has left us, there is someone on an other beach seeing him slowly coming from the horizon.
Someone waiting for him,
waiting for just him,
when he reach his new harbour.
