Our condolences to Mrs. James´ family and friends. Our parents were close friends; our fathers were friends and colleagues since medical school . Just this week, my brother and I were speaking of Dr and Mrs James, and their children, and recalling time spent together when we were younger. Shirley was one of the most gentle people I have known. She always had a kind word to say and showed interest in every one she encountered. A truly lovely lady.

I give my condolences to all of Shirley James´ family. Shirley James had exhibitions with Charles Lloyd Tucker and Chesley Trott so she is one of the people that made me think thank a young black Bermudian could become an artist and join the BSOA. People like her made me not be intimidated by the City Hall or any galleries. I wasn´t that close to her but she always had words of encouragement whenever I saw her. I usually saw her entering or leaving City Hall. I often hear people talking about the art scene in Bermuda improving but artists like Shirley James kept the art scene going in the 1960s,70s, 80s and 90s. That´s when I was starting out and then maturing as an artist so Shirley James deserves to be honored for her contribution to Bermuda´s art. Shirley James represents the end of an era. I always found it interesting that Bermudians who were educated or worked overseas married artists. Shirley James, Georgine Hill and Gwen Robinson Cann were probably the three dominant black women artists for a period and they were the American and Canadian wives of politicians. I just always found that interesting. Louise Jackson was the wife of a Bermudian teacher whose contribution to the arts was introducing dance to young Bermudian girls. Shirley James is a historic figure in the history of the arts in Bermuda and should be remembered for that.

To Joanne, Nancy, Lynda, and the rest of Shirley's family:
I had several wonderful visits with Shirley over the last dozen years or so, where we would talk about our alma mater, Shirley's years growing up in Wolfville, and her many activities in her full Bermuda life. She was a marvel - gracious, smart, elegant, and driven. She will be missed by so many still here at Acadia University here in Wolfville, Nova Scotia.

My heart is heavy at the passing of Shirley. She (and her late husband, Dr Clarence James) were very special friends of me and my late husband (Cyril). We spent many happy times together - not only socially, but while assisting her spouse, Dr Clarence James when he was canvassing for the UBP. Shirley was kind, fun-loving, knowledgeable, and congenial. We played bridge together for many years. She will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved her. RIP my dear friend.
