Many a sailor has fond memories of arriving at St George's harbour to be greeted and informed by Bernie, the sailor's dock Master for information. All of us will miss him but arriving sailor's in particular. Lilly and family, thank you on behalf of sailors, for giving so much time to him to do the job of sailor's dock Master. St George's and sailors grieve with you

As a European sailing crew that met Bernard several times on transatlantic crossings we will forever cherish all the memories that he created by sharing time, offering support, letting us all feel welcome and showing us your beautiful islands. No more customs dock at 2am, to welcome and console broken sailors in their broken boats. Sailor of sailors, crossed the bar. Peace. We will see you again.

I first met Bernie in 1985, when he took me for my IN truck test, he'd then come to machine & casting to test our vehicles, my private car always had to be taken to TCD so Bernie could get a lift :-) he was a lovely guy and my thoughts are with Mrs Oatley at this sad time. xx

Bernard was my first cousin. My husband Brian and I, have lovely memories of times spent with Bernard and Lily both in the UK and Bermuda. He was a very special person, quite unique and so knowledgeable about anything to do with sailing and the sea. He seemed to know everyone in Bermuda and he was such a kind, thoughtful man who gave help to so many. He will be very much missed.
Our love to Lily and all the family. Sylvia & Brian, also my brothers Peter and John and their wives, and my daughter, Kerry-Jane.

Dear Lily, Alan, Joy, and members of the extended Oatley family: my sincere condolences on the passing of your beloved Bernie. I first met Bernard in 1978, when he was an Examiner at TCD. During my Driving Test, he had his elbow out the window. When I passed close to a parked car, he shouted as he quickly pulled his arm into the car. I thought for sure he was going to fail me, but being a kind person, he passed me! More than 40 years later, I met Bernie again, in a professional capacity, and we had a good laugh about that incident. Bernie was an old fashioned gentleman, and I admired his determination to remain as independent as possible. May your many happy memories ease the pain of his passing.

My thoughts and prayers with my extended family in Bermuda. Have memories of him when he visited the states and our couple of days when I visited Bermuda in 2009. He gave me the grand tour of the Island and I especially loved the Tea time at 3:00 pm at his home both evenings. He taught me so much about my family's history in those couple of days. He will be missed.

I remember Mr. Oatley as the Dockmaster in St. George´s, while I was working at the Customs Yacht Reporting Centre. He was always out to greet arriving yachts with a pleasant smile and the warm friendliness that Bermuda is known for. He guided visitors on where to dock or anchor and generously shared advice on where to go and what to see. Often, he would even take weary sailors to his home so they could enjoy a shower and a meal after their long journey to Bermuda.
His kindness and hospitality left a lasting impression on so many.
Condolences to his family and friends, may the many memories shared over the years comfort you during this difficult time.
