I am so sorry to hear of Steve's passing, which I only found out about by chance. I met Steve through horticulture and permaculture many years ago and was very fond of him. He was kind, generous and always had time for people. May he rest with his people, the angels.

Dear Mrs Sainsbury and family,
I went to Wooster, OH, with Steve in 1994, he was my hall-mate in the dorm we lived in. I was an international student, very far away from home and everything familiar to me then. Steve was the nicest, and he was one of the first people to invite me in and make me feel at home. Even though he left Wooster that year, I have always remembered his great smile, kindness and his gentleness fondly and with much love and appreciation. He is a kind soul.

To the Sainsbury family,
I am writing on behalf of all of us at Asheville Poverty Initiative and 12 Baskets Cafe, where Steve was a consistent, positive presence and support for many. Most days, Steve would be in the garden, talking to community members, offering friendship, and humor, or being a great listener. Steve spent so many hours arranging basic needs for so many that had been forgotten and left behind in our city. He did this mostly behind the scenes, completely selflessly, always humble, and uninterested in acclaim or credit. So many here in Asheville are better and stronger because we knew Steve. We will miss him terribly and are so, so grateful to have known him and considered him part of our family. We celebrate his life and hope to honor his life by carrying on his important work. Thank you for Steve.
Love,
API and 12 Baskets Family

I am so sorry to hear of Steve’s passing. I had the pleasure of getting to know him in the Bermuda Regiment where he signed up for the NCO’s Cadre. He was noted for his good nature and his sense of humour, particularly under adverse situations. No matter how badly things were going he could always be counted on for a joke, a laugh and a smile. He will be sorely missed.

Very sad to learn of Steve's passing. He was always down to earth and with a good laugh and story to tell. So humble and had a wicked sense of humor. My condolences to his wife, kids and family.
