Only just come across the sad news of the passing of one of Sheffield´s true characters. As a graphic designer working for James Neill, one of Sheffield´s tool manufacturers I took photographs to Fred on numerous occasions for retouching. He worked in the same office in St Paul´s Chambers near the Peace Gardens as a designer friend Terry Smith, the same building where David Blunkett worked who I saw a couple of times when visiting Fred. Fred was a lovely fellow and sometimes when I called his home number his mum would answer and I would say "hello is that Mr McMain´s secretary" which amused her greatly. I could go on about Fred but sadly we lost touch many years ago, a talented and lovely man. RIP Fred x

My Uncle Fred was a very special person. He was truly unique and one of life's kind people. He was very unassuming and lived a humble life. His artwork was exquisite, he was incredibly talented. He spent his life living with my grandma and was very much her carer in her later years. I will miss his unique take on life, one of life's true eccentrics and a person who would never harm a fly. Thank you to Aaron House for caring for him when he needed extra support - the family really appreciated the excellent care he received. Rest in peace and fly high xx

Fred was a very dear and honourable friend since school days .He was a very honest and generous person and an exquisite artist . He spent most of his life with his artistic God given gifts . His family were very very humble and loyal friends , and he spent most of his time displaying his tremendous gifts in art developing marvellous paintings for special magazines doing very precise work for a number of firms in Sheffield and also his skills were called for in London .His main art work consisted of Lancaster bombers , Spitfires , Vulcan bombers and small leisure planes for various flying clubs .
He will be sadly missed and I send my prayers and condolences to Helen and her family
