CHRISTINE DARTER Obituary

CHRISTINE ELIZABETH DARTERChristine passed away on Wednesday 24th January 2024, aged 95. Predeceased by her husband Ivor, mother to Amanda and Paul, grandmother to Beth and Milo, she lived across Africa for many years before settling in Hampshire. A skilled botanical artist she illustrated reference works on the trees of Britain and worked for the Institute of Oceanographic Sciences in the lab as well as on marine research trips. She had an amazing knowledge of all plant types and was Liphook's tree warden for many years. She loved tennis, her family and the natural world (not always in the same order).

I am so sorry to hear about the passing of Christine Darter and send my condolences to her family .
Christine employed me over a couple of years when I was a student teacher .She gave me a most wonderful holiday job to play with her four year old son , Paul . This gave her time to work at home as well as looking after her very young baby daughter , Mandy .
She was a super person to work for .She was kind , friendly and easy-going . Always cheerful with a good sense of humour she treated me very well , more like being a friend of the family .
Later on she often took us on trips out . On one occasion I remember we visited Windsor Safari Park and we also went for trips into the countryside which she made so interesting with her expert knowledge of all the plants .
I remember on our way back from a walk on a hot day we visited a local pub in Fernhurst called `The Duke of Cumberland´ . It was built high up on a slope and on front was a most lovely ,natural looking garden . We sat at the top . It was landscaped with the sound of trickling water and had a small pond in between the plants .
It wasn´t until later I learned that Christine had designed this
Garden design was just another of her talentsl .
One one occasion she had been working at her desk completing one of her Tree Posters for the Forestry Commission .
I was invited to have a look . It was a beautifully detailed painting in watercolour and was exceptional . This I greatly admired and influenced my artwork until today .
I learned such a lot from her .
I often saw these posters in schools for years afterwards .
Christine is someone I have especially liked and admired throughout my life . I feel so proud to have been given the chance to get to know her and spend this short time with her .
I will never forget what a wonderful person she was.
I am so sorry for your family `s loss and send my kindest thoughts .

I have just discovered 5 posters from the 1970s, collected when I was a young teacher. I am now 75.They are Forestry Commission information posters of forest trees in Great Britain painted by Christine Darter. I looked her up to discover more and found that she had just died. She was a gifted artist, they are a delight. Please accept my condolences on your loss. I have a strong feeling that she had a good life.
