Edith Riley Obituary

Edith Wendy Riley,
known as Wendy,
nee Clayton
Wendy was born in Thorpe in November 1944, to Fred and Dorothy Clayton, their third daughter, a sister for Anne and Jennifer.
After a happy childhood, she was educated, first at Burnsall Primary School then at Casterton School.
Following a year at the North of England Secretarial College in Leeds, her first employment was in the offices of Thomas Lumb & Co.
After just under six months, severe back pain from a slipped disc resulted in time on traction in Rawdon Hospital followed by a period of being in a plater-cast until an operation to fuse the vertebrae was required. Her next job was at the Craven Herald in the advertising offices going on to become Advertising Manager.
In 1968, she married Robert and they lived in Thorpe. Sadly, no children were forthcoming, but she took pleasure in following the exploits of her seven nephews and nieces. The opportunity arose to become secretary for Kilnsey Show which she took and enjoyed
for 12 years.
Wendy worked for Michael Whitaker Fabrics prior to buying Spinning Jenny in 1996, running the retail business at Kildwick. After protracted negotiations the purchase of Bark Laithe Farm, Flasby, in 2002 has been the final move. Increasing disability resulting in several falls and reduced mobility necessitated the sale of Spinning Jenny after 25 years (to the day). She maintained her interest in all things 'needlework', continuing to stitch as the mood took her.
Wendy passed away at her home on 10th December 2025.
A private funeral service has taken place.
