Alfred Lewerenz Obituary

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Alfred Thomas Lewerenz, who left us on September 16, 2025 at the age of 89. Born in New York City to the late Heinz and Sarah (Kilgannon) Lewerenz, Al lived a life full of service, dedication, and love for his family.

Al's devotion to his country began in 1952 when he enlisted in the Florida Army National Guard. Over his distinguished 33-year career, he rose from the rank of Private to Lieutenant Colonel. As a Battalion Commander of the 53rd Infantry Brigade in Coral Gables, Florida, Al was instrumental in ensuring communication lines were open between combat troops during critical operations. These operations included natural disasters such hurricanes, civil security control and infrastructure and logistic support. His leadership, integrity, and commitment to his troops left an enduring mark on those who served with him.

Guided by his love for learning, Al approached his education with the same drive and determination that defined his career. A proud graduate of Lindsey Hopkins Vocational School (1953), he went on to complete the United States Army Signal School in 1960 and later graduated from the prestigious US Army Command and General Staff College in 1980.

Al's passion for electronics led him to a successful career in the television industry. After high school, he began working with WTVJ in Miami, where he honed his skills as a projectionist and maintenance supervisor. His technical expertise and love for broadcasting eventually led to his role as a Remote Supervisor, where he traveled the country covering events from concerts, boxing matches, telethons and even the Olympics. In 1988, Al co-founded Omni Video, a company specializing in remote television production, before later taking on the role of Engineering Manager at Telemundo in the 1990s. He also served as a Technical Advisor for the Broward County School Board (BECON), ensuring the next generation of broadcasters was well-equipped for success.

Outside of his professional achievements, Al was a man of many talents and interests. As a young man, he enjoyed racing stock cars at Hialeah Speedway and delivering newspapers on the streets of South Florida. In his later years, Al enjoyed running in 5k races, camping with his family, and volunteering with the Orange Bowl Committee. A lover of sports, Al was a devoted fan of the Miami Hurricanes and the Miami Dolphins, and found joy watching his teams play with friends and family. His greatest joy, however, was found in his family. Al was a constant source of love and support, always cherishing the moments spent with those closest to him.

In the early 1980's, Al bought two lots in the new community of Rainbow Springs, with the dream of one-day building a home and moving there full-time. Finally, after retirement, he decided to make the move north. While in Rainbow Springs, Al loved hosting his annual Labor Day party where family and friends could tube down the river and enjoy each other's fellowship. He loved playing pool on Wednesday nights and golf at the Rainbow's End Golf Club. He especially loved Meadowbrook Church where he and Marilyn could be found each Sunday listening to the incredible worship team and hearing God's word from their pastors.

Al is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Marilyn (Copps); his children, Lorraine Berg, Stephanie (Ramon) Hanks, Jennifer (Doug) Brant, and Stephen (Kim) Lewerenz; his grandchildren, Brian, Joyce, Andrew, Sydney, Jarrett, Stevie, Sarah, Jackson, and Chase; and his great-grandchildren, Julian, Emery, and Lily. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews, all of whom loved him dearly. Al's love for his family knew no bounds, and his legacy will live on through them.

Al will be remembered for his boundless energy, his deep love for his family, and his unwavering commitment to his country and community. He was a true patriot, a visionary in his field, and above all, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and friend. His passing leaves a void in the lives of all who knew him, but his spirit will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to have crossed his path.

A celebration of his life is pending final confirmation, day and time to be announced shortly. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to E.W. & Lucille Cates House in Al's memory. Checks should be made out to Cates House, 9505 SW 110th Street, Ocala, FL 34481.

Rest in peace, Al. Your legacy of service, love, and family will live on forever.
