John Bennett Obituary

October 4, 1962 – October 13, 2025

John T. "Jack" "Gator" Bennett Jr., 63, of Ocklawaha, Florida, passed away peacefully on the evening of Monday, October 13, 2025.

Born in Jacksonville, Florida, on October 4, 1962, to John T. "Tom" Bennett and Marjorie Ellen Smith (Cummings), Jack-affectionately known by many as "Gator"-was a man of service, patriotism, and unwavering dedication to his community and country.

From a young age, Jack dreamed of flying and serving his nation. He fulfilled that dream through a distinguished 21-year career in the United States Air Force, serving, Jack embodied the values of integrity, courage, and leadership throughout his military life.

After his military service, Jack continued his lifelong commitment to helping others. He was a proud Freemason, a respected leader in the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and an active member of The American Legion and AMVETS. Within The American Legion family, Jack held numerous leadership roles over the years, including Post Commander, District Commander, Chaplain, and Vice Commander for both the Post and District levels. His 25 years of dedicated service in The American Legion and 15 years with the Sons of The American Legion reflected his steadfast devotion to veterans and community service.

From birth, Jack dedicated his life to patriotism, fellowship, and helping others. His energy, kindness, and commitment to veterans' causes made him a friend, mentor, and advocate for all things good. The earth has truly lost an amazing servant leader.

Jack is survived by his beloved wife, Lynn Bennett (Michaud); two sons, Daniel and Travis Bennett; three grandchildren, Mason, Morgan, and Molly Bennett; his father, John Bennett; stepfather, Leonard Smith; his mother- and father-in-law, Claudette and Jerry Michaud; his brother-in-law, Jerry J.P. Michaud, and sister-in-law, Wanda Sally; and his cousin, Donald Bruce Cummings and wife Amy, along with their two sons, Xander and Matthew Cummings. He was preceded in death by his mother, Marjorie Smith (Cummings).

A celebration of Jack's life will be held on November 8, 2025, in Summerfield, FL. Interment will follow at Bushnell National Cemetery with full military honors on December 19, 2025, at 12:30pm.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations or wreath sponsorships be made to Wreaths Across America, one of Jack's greatest passions and a cause close to his heart.

Please keep Jack's family and friends in your thoughts and prayers as they remember a remarkable man whose service and spirit will never be forgotten.

Jack was a great friend and brother. He will be greatly missed by many in the American Legion family. He was and still is a warrior for our troops. He had to have his hands into everything that involved veterans and our country. He is a patriot. Miss you brother, no more pain, you can rest now, we will take the helm.
