Richard Chang Obituary

Richard G. Chang, 82, of Honolulu and The Villages, Florida, passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 5, 2025 in The Villages. Rick was born in Honolulu, Hawaii on December 31, 1942, to Dr. Yen Pui and Anne Chang. Rick was raised and educated in Honolulu, attending Punahou School, Menlo College in California, then the University of Southern California, completing his education with a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting. Rick served his country with purpose and distinction. He enlisted in the Navy during the Vietnam War and, when his leadership abilities were recognized, was nominated for the prestigious Officer Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island. He was commissioned Lieutenant, Junior Grade, and cultivated his management skills as Head of the Operations Department aboard the USS Wexford County (LST-1168). After his military service, Rick returned to Honolulu and embarked on a successful career with Dillingham Land Corporation, serving as both Business and Leasing Manager for the Ala Moana Shopping Center, the largest open-air shopping center in the world. He later managed the Queen Ka'ahumanu Shopping Center on Maui, then the Windward Mall in Kane'ohe, Oahu until his retirement. Rick was a devoted husband to his loving wife, Patty. They cherished 32 years of marriage, living in Hawaii and retiring in The Villages in Florida. Rick was an avid fan of University of Hawaii football and baseball programs and an accomplished runner, competing in numerous foot races and impressively completing five marathons. Additionally, Rick was a proud Life Member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks. Rick and Patty enjoyed such adventures as traveling to China, the Cook Islands, New Zealand, and across the U.S., as well as cruising to Alaska, the Baltic, and through the Panama Canal. Rick is survived by his beloved wife Patty Borghoff, brother Arthur Chang and sister-in-law Peggy (Canton, GA), sister Sally Chang (The Villages, FL), in-laws, nieces and nephews, neighbors, and countless lifelong friends in Hawaii and on the mainland. Relatives and friends are invited to a Celebration of Life and memorial service at Hiers-Baxley Funeral Home, 3975 Wedgewood Lane, The Villages, Florida on November 10, 2025, at 8:45 a.m. Interment will follow at 11:00 a.m. at Florida National Cemetery, 605 SW 102nd Avenue, Bushnell, Florida. Following Rick's wishes, attire will be casual. In lieu of flowers, please donate in Rick's name to The Parkinson's Foundation, P.O.
