Thomas Sangster Obituary

Dr. Thomas "Craig" Sangster, born February 25, 1959, in Dallas, Texas, passed away suddenly on April 12, 2025, in Ocala, Florida. A devoted husband, father, scientist, and friend, Craig's life was marked by intellectual brilliance, boisterous "dad" humor, and a deep love for both discovery and the outdoors. He earned a Bachelor of Science from Baylor University before continuing to Purdue University to complete both his Master's and PhD in Physics while proudly cheering "Boiler up!" It was at Purdue that he met the love of his life, Rhonda. Their marriage was filled with shared adventures and enduring love for over 41 years. Craig began his professional career at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory before moving on to the University of Rochester, where he retired in 2023. Over the course of his distinguished career in physics, Craig authored or co-authored numerous scientific publications and consulted for the National Nuclear Security Administration and Department of Energy. His contributions to science were vast, leaving a legacy in the field. Beyond his professional achievements, Craig lived a life rich with personal passions. A devoted golfer, through and through, Craig could be found playing in any weather: sun, rain, or even snow. Whether practicing for hours on the putting green, sharing laughs at Texas BBQ Joint after a round with his Rochester golf buddies, or morning rounds with his beloved group of friends affectionately known as the "old farts" he never missed an opportunity to play a round. A gifted pianist, Craig poured emotion into every note he played. His home often resonated with the lively syncopations of ragtime and the delicate intricacies of Chopin's etudes. Music was not just a hobby but a source of deep personal expression and comfort. From an early age, Craig was captivated by flight. During college he was a co-pilot on the Baylor University airplane, ferrying staff, athletes and alumni around the country. He also enjoyed piloting remote-controlled aircraft around local parks. Craig also cherished time spent outdoors with his sons as a Scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troop 310 of Penfield, NY. Many weekends were devoted to camping trips in New York's ever-changing weather, a reflection of Craig's enduring love for his boys. He is survived by his beloved wife Rhonda; their sons Doug (Diane, wife) and Trevor (Emma, partner); his sister Cindy; and many cousins who will remember him fondly. Craig was predeceased by his mother Geraldine "Gerry" Farmer and father Thomas Murdock Sangster. A memorial service to honor Craig's life will be held at 6:00 PM on Thursday, April 17, 2025, at Roberts of Ocala West Chapel, located at 6241 SW State Rd 200, Ocala, Florida 34476. So very sorry to learn he passed after seeing him on the putting green earlier that day. Our memories are golf related. Thus, I´m sure Craig will find a pretty good foursome to play with in heaven!

So sorry to learn of Craig's passing. Craig was always a smiling face at LLE, who listened thoughtfully to colleagues. He spoke lovingly of his wife and sons, his scouting activities, church and GOLF. Best wishes to everyone who cared for him. You will be missed, Craig.

I'm a French colleague of Craig's who gave me a lot of support in developing nuclear measurement systems. Craig has always been very encouraging and supportive of my work. We've kept in touch for a long time and hope to meet up again one day. Life decided otherwise, and I'm infinitely saddened by his passing. To Rhonda and your children, I offer my sincere condolences and my thoughts are with you, his family, at this difficult time. Laurent Disdier

What a terrible sad news and moreover so young !!!! I was so boulversed that I have versed a tear when I had been informed by another US colleague from NIF laser fusion facility some days after his death...
I present my very sincere condoleances to his family.
I known Craig for a very long time (1980's) when he worked @ LLNL and LLE laboratories for developing, as me, laser fusion.
Since my retirement in 2017 we have contined to exchange by email.
I am now also very deseperate to haven't meet him a last time when I watched the past total solar eclipse April, 8th, 2024 in Texas (he convince me to drive down there in spite of my fear of weapons into that state). He wasn't able to travel up to Rochester later when I meet some of my former LLE colleagues and friends in May, 2nd for a last meeting there...
He will stay for ever into my memory as an important part of my life and not only for laser fusion scientifics exchanges but also for other parts of the life as weather, friends and political issues worldwide...
Jean-Luc BOURGADE French citizen, retired laser fusion scientist, have partly (2 years and half cumulated long) stayed during 20 years @ LLE (1998-2017)

On behalf of CEA colleagues from France, please ack nowledge our sincere condoleances.

Personally I have spent the first 15 years coming a few time a year to LLE and I gave always enjoyed any discussion s we had with Craig.

It is a very sad and abrupt news for all former french colleagues. I will always remember Craig as a good guy and enjoyable scientist, with his Dr Peppers drink nearby.

All the best
