Eileen Fulton Obituary

Eileen Fulton, an actress, singer and author whose long career on the daytime drama As The World Turns earned her a Daytime Emmy Lifetime Achievement Award, died on July 14 in Asheville, N.C. after a period of declining health.
Fulton was born Margaret Elizabeth McLarty in Asheville on September 13, 1933. Her father, James B. McLarty, was a Methodist minister who served congregations in western North Carolina. Her mother, Margaret Glenn McLarty, was a public school teacher.
After graduating from Greensboro College with a bachelor's degree in music in 1956, Fulton performed in the outdoor drama The Lost Colony in Manteo, N.C., before moving to New York to pursue her acting career, a move strongly supported by her parents.
Fulton studied acting with Sanford Meisner and Lee Strasberg at the Neighborhood Playhouse and later studied dance with Martha Graham. She began using the stage name Eileen Fulton and in 1960 was cast in the film Girl of the Night, co-starring with Anne Francis.
In 1960 she was cast in what would become the defining role of her career, portraying Lisa Miller on the CBS soap opera As The World Turns. The character would eventually be married eight times. Fulton played the role with only brief interruptions until the show was cancelled in 2010, making her one of the longest running soap opera actors in the United States. Fulton's eagerness to play Lisa as a villainess contributed to the character's popularity and therefore its longevity. She was inducted into the Soap Opera Hall of Fame in 1998 and was awarded a Daytime Emmy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2004.
For a time early in her career she not only was appearing in As The World Turns, which at that time was broadcast live, she was simultaneously appearing on Broadway in Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf and off-Broadway in the long-running musical The Fantasticks.
A talented writer and singer as well as an actress, Fulton performed a cabaret act for many years in venues around New York and Los Angeles. In 1970, she co-authored her first autobiography, How My World Turns. In 1995 she co-authored a second autobiography, As My World Still Turns, to celebrate her 35th anniversary on As the World Turns. She also authored a series of mystery novels.
Fulton retired in 2019 and moved to Black Mountain, N.C. She is survived by her brother, Charles Furman McLarty (Karen) of Black Mountain; niece Katharine Morris (David) and their children, Everly Ann Morris and Easton Lane Morris of Fort Mill, S.C.; and sister-in-law Chris Page McLarty of Camden, Maine. She was pre-deceased by her parents and her brother, James Fulton McLarty.
Groce Funeral Home in Asheville is handling funeral arrangements. Services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 9, 2025 at Central United Methodist Church in Asheville, N.C.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the Reverend James B. McLarty Music Scholarship at Brevard College in Brevard, N.C., or the Margaret Glenn McLarty '28 and Eileen Fulton Music Scholarship Fund at Greensboro College in Greensboro, N.C.

Lisa was my all time favorite villainess in the soaps. I loved religiously watching ATWT everyday. She was truly one of a kind and deserved winning a lifetime achievement Emmy. I do think she should have won more Emmys, but I´m just glad that they honored her for her lifetime work. I will never forget her. May she rest in heavenly peace.

I was lucky enough to see her in Who´s Afraid of Virginia Woolf and thought she brilliant. I loved to hate her as Lisa Miller, a true sign of the depth of her talent. I really admire her willingness to give the best performance possible, no matter what the role was. Thanks Eileen for the memories!

I loved her character Lisa Miller and lived vicariously through her. Eileen was a brilliant actor and writer who will never be forgotten. I saw her off Broadway in the Fantastiks and was blown away by her performance. She was the best in everything she did including studying dance with Martha Graham. I´m so sorry for your heartbreaking loss. Eileen will be forever missed and loved by millions. RIP Eileen.

As the World Turns was my favorite soap opera growing up. I have so many great memories when I watch it now (I taped it on VHS videos). Eileen was a legend with unbelievable talent and great looks. I wasn´t surprised when she won all those Emmy´s. She proved that the soaps could be serious about their craft and gave them credibility. She was an excellent and gifted dancer as well. Eileen will be deeply missed and forever loved by her millions of fans. May she rest in eternal peace with God by her side.

Dearest Eileen, I send condolences to your family. Years ago, when Eileen was taking a short break from ATWT, she starred in Dinner Theatre productions around Texas. I was lucky enough to be chosen her assistant at Fiesta Dinner Playhouse in San Antonio. What a lovely person she was. And she had the most raucous sense of humor of anyone I've ever known!! We spent much of our time together laughing. And between Eileen and her two dogs, and all of her furs and paraphernalia, we looked like a circus caravan when we traveled. She was a joy to be with, wherever we were. And I will miss her lovely laughter and smiling face. Be happy in Heaven, dear friend. And brighten the corner where you are. Amy LaPresto

As 1,000 of women, I watched ATWT too.
Other than the soap opera, I worked with her kind brother Charles at McCulloch England Architects in Charlotte NC. He was so proud of his sister and her success. One time he went to New York for a visit. I gave him a Soap Opera Digest (which i still have) with her picture on the front for her to sign it. She also signed the mystery book she had written. I was thrilled when Charles brought them back to me. I'm hoping Charles will read this and remember me. I was the receptionist at the company. It was either 1986 or 1987. My last name was different at that time.
Charles, my love is for you and your family. My sincerest condolences.

I remember watching ATWT on TV with my mother. At that time I was about 8 years old and I still remember watching Lisa have a baby. They didn´t show anything below her shoulders, so the camera was focused on her face and she acted out the whole process.
Very memorable. So sad to hear of her passing. Condolences to her family.
