Larry Bootsma Obituary

Larry Mark Bootsma was born on June 26, 1978, in Des Moines, Iowa, and passed from this life on September 24, 2025, in Phoenix, Arizona. At the age of two, Larry was adopted into the loving family of his parents, Elvern and Helen Bootsma, along with his brothers Jay and James and his sister Laurie. In 1984, the family moved to Phoenix, Arizona, where Larry spent the rest of his childhood. Growing up, Larry loved skateboarding, bicycle tricks, and was a talented little league baseball player, honored as an All-Star numerous times. He graduated from Phoenix Christian High School, where he was active in both sports and music. A gifted musician, Larry earned All-State honors twice as an alto saxophonist and was invited to join the jazz ensemble Young Sounds of Arizona, sponsored by the local musicians' union. He also enjoyed playing the electric guitar. After high school, Larry's struggle with mental illness began, accompanied by challenges with self-medication. Despite these hardships, he found success and healing for a time through Teen Challenge of Arizona, where he also played in the band Forehead Flint and wrote the song "You Are My God." Larry lived with the dual diagnosis of schizophrenia and substance use disorder for many years. In recent years, he lived on the streets, yet throughout his journey, he never wavered from his faith. Larry loved Jesus and proclaimed Him boldly. His family takes comfort in knowing he is now with his Lord-free of illness, restored, and at peace. Larry is survived by his parents, Elvern and Helen; his brothers, Jay of Paullina, Iowa, and James (Dawn) of Pleasant Hill, Iowa; and his many beloved nieces and nephews: Anna (Jeffrey) Frahm, Mitchel Bootsma, Noah Bootsma, Kolby Bootsma, Evan Bootsma, Annabelle Bootsma, Sabrina Bootsma, Gabriel Bootsma, and Terry Steven Junier. He is also remembered by his great-nieces and nephews: Hailey, Charlie, Isaiah, Abigail, and Chandler Frahm. He was preceded in death by his sister, Laurie. Flowers are welcome, and those who wish may also make a donation in Larry's memory to Arizona Mad Moms.
