Diane K. Yanney

On May 4th, 2022 in Albuquerque, NM, Diane K. Yanney, lost her courageous battle with cancer at the age of 73. She is survived by her sister, Gloria Mattacola, and her nieces, Marjorie (Darren) Yauk, and Alice Mattacola and great nephews Tucker and Connor Yauk. Preceded in death by her parents, Harold and Marjorie Yanney, and step-mother Dorothy Yanney. As a graduate of Iowa State, she then received her masters degree at Madison in home economics journalism. Diane was a talented writer and was a senior editor at Meredith Publishing in Des Moines for over 30 years. She was a gifted storyteller, and had the ability to keep a captive audience in her writing and in person. An expert quilter, knitter, and all around DIY lady, Diane, had a knack for learning how to make beautiful things and sharing them with the people she loved. She also was an avid traveler and was able to realize her dream of living in New Mexico after spending most of her life in Des Moines, IA. There she spent countless hours volunteering with elementary school kids teaching reading, and working as a docent, educating people on her favorite place to be, Albuquerque. She loved her community and was surrounded by wonderful friends. Her charisma, laugh, and humor will be missed by anyone that had the opportunity to interact with her. A selfless and down-to-earth, strong, woman, Diane made her mark the on the world, and has left it much brighter than before she came.

I still think of you so often, my friend Yanney, and smile a sad smile...you were one of a kind and I'm grateful to have known you.

I've just learned of Yanney's passing, and I'm flooded with memories of my Country America magazine friend and mentor. She took me out on my first day on the job for margaritas, and that was just the beginning of the laughs we shared. No-nonsense, exceptionally intelligent, and incredibly talented. I admired her greatly. One of a kind.

So sorry to hear this news. Diane gave Old Town tours for Albuquerque Museum for many years as did I. We had such wonderful travel discussions with each other, as we always loved anticipating the next trip. Blessings and healing to her family.

Diane and I met at Iowa State and remained friends for over 50 years. She was a good human being and a great baker. My husband will miss her pear pie.
