Playing with my cousin Brent one day in the early 60's, we came across Uncle George's workbench. A shiny steel round bar caught my eye. I grabbed it and went about my play business with Brent. Later that day, I met a friend of mine and well, we played some more of course. I showed him the steel bar and he was impressed enough to offer me a 50 cent piece for it. The deal was done. A couple days later, my Dad Harry, Georges younger brother asked me about that bar and if I knew anything about it. My heart sunk,my legs trembled and the skies grew dark and ominous.
Dad brought me over to speak with Uncle George.
I knew it. I was dead. Uncle George sat me down and began to explain to me in his kind and patient voice what the part was to his Sailplane. He showed me where it was to fit and what it was supposed to do. Then he asked me if I knew anything about it's whereabouts. I sheepishly answered him and told him everything. To my surprise, he asked me only to try to get it back from my friend. I said "Sure Uncle George, I can go over to his house right now." I did manage to coax my friend out of it by showing him the five dollars Uncle George gave me to sweeten the deal.
I got the part back........WOW!
Not once did Uncle George raise his voice or change his kindly demeanor one iota during our time together, then or ever!
Well, I knew that My Father however was going to have some stern words for me about keeping my hands off of other people's property and he surely did not disappoint.
God bless you, Uncle George and Dad.
