Karl Buttner

Karl Buttner, known affectionately as Opa, passed away peacefully surrounded by family at the age of 92 on September 3rd, 2024. He is survived by his wife Rita of nearly 70 years, two sons Chris (Jayne) and Ralph (Genny) and daughter Michelle (Chris) and loving grandchildren.

Karl was born in Schwabisch Gmund, Germany where he learned his trade as a watchmaker. He met his wife in that same small town and they married in 1955. Karl and Rita were able to immigrate to the United States in 1961 which he would call home for the rest of his life. In 1972, the family moved to Albuquerque where he built a successful retail jewelry store and watch repair shop. Karl was a highly respected Certified Master Watchmaker-Clockmaker and jeweler. He was a member of the American Gem Society and the American Watchmakers-Clockmakers Institute and served on the board of the latter. He remained active in life and enjoyed skiing, gardening, cooking and model railroading.

Opa was a devoted husband, caring father, loving grandfather and a most genuine man. He will be considerably missed by his family and friends. His humble request to have no services will be honored by his family and the family requests in lieu of flowers to please consider giving to All Faiths Children's Advocacy Center at 1709 Moon St NE Albuquerque, NM 87112.

Dear Mrs. Buttner,

We were deeply saddened to hear the news concerning Mr Buttner. He was a gentleman and a craftsman of great talent and it was a pleasure and an honor to have been able to know him and do business with him. Mr. Buttner's integrity and commitment to his craft and the service he provided to his clients will always be remembered. The standard he set in all things of life will always be respected by those of us who were fortunate to know him.
He was both a valued colleague and a trusted friend, and he will be greatly missed.

Dear Rita and Family,

I am deeply sorry for your loss. Karl was an inspiration and a significant figure in the Albuquerque watchmaker community. His passion and talent as a watchmaker were unmatched-he had the skill to repair nearly anything he was given. I was fortunate to start my career in Albuquerque, and TWM was a great help to me during that time. I not only received parts, but also much-needed support and encouragement.

Thank you for sharing Karl with us. He will be greatly missed.
